My doctor confuses sex and gender

Should I correct him? This is really common in my obgyn office. They have called my next ultrasound a gender scan several times. They seem to believe there is no difference and they are medical professionals so I feel wierd correcting them. :-/

Re: My doctor confuses sex and gender

  • I'd also be concerned if the only reason they were doing this scan was to find out the sex.  It certainly wouldn't fly with the insurance company, it would not be reimbursed.
Ask them to call it as what the code for insurance.  An anatomy scan.

  • My doctor does the same thing. I don't correct him, but always make a point of emphasizing the word sex instead of gender. I've found that he's started saying sex as well (at least while talking to me).

  • I'm self pay, but it's the anatomy scan "where we will find out the gender"... That's what he has said several times. I notice it every time. I totally agree with the annoyance of it on this forum (and everywhere else) but is the gender/sex thing universally known by many? Since I started this app I have learned how important it is but my fb newsfeed is flooded with gender reveals and "can't wait to find out the gender of my baby!" And my doctor and everyone in the office calls it gender.... It drives me crazy, really
  • I feel like until rather recently the two could be interchanged without much thought.  They don't mean the same thing but since it wasn't recognized that sex and gender don't always aligned in the way it is now that some people are a little behind on the times.  It's kind of like how "Autism" wasn't clearly defined until the 80s/90s.  Until then many people living with autism were often diagnosed as having "Mental Retardation" and Schizophrenia was often misdiagnosed as Autism.  It was a lack of knowledge.

Now even young children are having their rights to acknowledge their gender in schools given to them by law, and those laws recognize the sex =/= gender.  But this is very new, like in the last 5 years.  It'll take time for everyone to realize the difference and start using the correct terminology, and until then I find it best to correct people.  Even if they blow it off and don't change at least they've been told by someone there's a difference.

  • I didn't know the difference before I got here. My doctors office does the same thing. I think they think sex will offend people.
  • I too had never really thought about the difference before I came to this community so I appreciated the education. It makes total sense to me now and the education will increase the more people politely inform others.
  • My office does this too but once I started saying sex they said it too. I asked the genetics counselor about this before (since we needed to do an early blood test to find out baby's sex for further genetics testing) and she said in her experience most people just feel weird saying the word sex when it comes to talking about a baby and have a look of horror on their faces.

The irony, of course, being, that sex is almost always involved in the TTC process. (Whether it's what gets you pregnant is a different story, but it's usually where people start...)

Yes I have always thought that too. Haha. Maybe the though of your unborn child having sex one day? Freaks people out.
  • Interesting fact: tax laws use the word sex refer to a male or female farm animal.

Interestingly, no one has asked me the gender...or sex. Everyone has asked if we know what we are having, is it a boy or girl, or have we seen a penis. The doctor asked if I wanted to see the baby's genetalia (sp).

  • Does it bother anyone else that TB (the app) only uses gender and not sex??? I keep seeing it all over this app..and it's just weird to me because I know most of the women on here are huge on it
  • I never noticed it in my doctors appointments, but I know whenever I use the term sex around my mom, she is always a little Squimish.... So I do it all the time now. Plus she can't correct me since I am right.

Wondered the same thing. It's supported in the forums but not by the bump app as a whole because they use gender In terms of Sex all the time

How is it okay to say "it's a boy" or "it's a girl" then? Isn't that exactly the same thing as saying "gender"?

No. It's a boy and it's a girl refer to sex not gender. I really don't know where you got the comparison you posted.

"It has a penis" and "it has a vagina" refer to sex. "It's a boy" and "it's a girl" refer to gender.

    This is why I'm confused.
When I say my daughters a girl I mean she has a vagina, I don't think anyone will misunderstand that in reality

I can't edit for some reason, I think when referring to an infant or small child, using the word girl or boy is perfectly acceptable considering they aren't yet old enough to identify with any particular gender so it's safe to go with whatever sex organs the child has

  • You may give birth to a girl, but that girl may end up identifying as male. Biologically you have a boy or girl, but their gender may not match that. So, you know their sex, not their gender.

So yes according to that chart, you biologically are male or female but identify as woman or man/girl or boy. The problem being there isn't any actual word other than boy or girl to identify an individual who hasn't made their gender known yet.

Right. So my confusion is that it seems that calling a baby with an unknown gender a girl or boy is equivalent to calling their sex their gender. We have a big problem with the latter but it seems like we ignore the former.
Well the difference is while we don't have a term for an individual who hasn't expressed preference yet, there IS a difference between sex and gender AND we have the terminology to differentiate between the two. Saying I'm having a boy because there isn't a word for a male who is unable to express preference isn't the same as saying gender and sex are the same.
Can't you just say "baby has a penis"? Seems like we do have a word for it.
Your first question about this seemed sincere, but this seems like arguing just to argue.

I think @meladoriestar‌ explained the difference pretty clearly.
I genuinely don't get why we pick on the difference between gender and sex, but still say I'm having a boy/girl. Guess there's no good explanation for it. Thanks for trying.
You do not have a point here. Thanks for trying.

Also, you could also raise a genderless child, like @BattyMomma‌ . I agree with Mel's call out and think her input would be valuable here... :)

They could also identify themselves as without gender. Equally male and female but neither one.
I think one of the pronouns instead of they in that case may be xe.
You can see the gender bread "man"  2.0 is a continuum not either or.

I am flattered that some thought of me for this conversation.
For various reasons I have been laying low to avoid confusion and association with certain unsavory individuals, but I am here.

At any rate, the statement above is the one I agree with most. Most of you know I am raising my child Ash without a defined gender until they are able to express a preference in any direction (none at all is fine as well). While this particular issue is not my own, it is something I have thought about quite a lot.

We can talk about biology, if that is what you wish to tell people about after your anatomy scan, for we are discussing anatomy. You can use the words that are appropriate for describing sex organs;  penis and vagina.
As our society is still rather confused about all of the ways a human can develop, physically and emotionally, this is the point at which we run into grey zones as a people. Even with the words male and female, which were once strictly in reference to anatomy, we cross into the realm of one's identity rather than their physical bodies. Once we describe those organs, we give our child a piece of their identity whether they like it or not. This is one of the many reasons I have made this choice regarding my child. It may seem extreme to some, but as others have said, if you aren't a part of the solution, you are a part of the problem. I would like my child to be an individual who hasn't made their gender known yet, as the poster above said plainly and eloquently. I hope that my insight was useful to someone.
  • I personally wouldn't.
