Trouble TTC

Questions ( probably stupid but I am new at this)

Ok ladies... I am new as you know.. I have a few, probably stupid questions. I have seen some info and then tried to research but keep getting different answers...
Does putting a pillow beneath you and holding your legs up in the air 20 min after sex really increase your chances of getting pregnant?
Does lube really kill the sperm?
What are the statistics of success on meds with TI, IUI and IVF?
Im confused about the 2WW, It is the time when you should have a pos/neg test right? If you test before this can you still get earlier results or is this what is considered the earliest you can get a result?
I also bought a supply of Wondfo (sp) pregnancy tests, do yall think that they are pretty accurate?
During your testing for ovulation, does the clinic test you for ovulation with u/s and b/w or do you do OPK at home and then call them etc?
My doctors have already diagnosed me with infertility as I haven't seen AF in 3 years (since chemo began), but we have no clue how many, if any, eggs I have left. Will the doctor be able to find this out or will it just be a estimate based on if I ovulate ?
I'm sure I have a few more questions.. but this is it for now.. Thanks in advance.

Re: Questions ( probably stupid but I am new at this)

  • I've always held up my hips/legs after baby-making sex, not for 20 minutes, but a few minutes so I feel confident that when everything comes out it is not taking all the sperm with it. I pee right after that, but I don't think it would increase risk of UTI any more than having sex a few minutes longer would. Also (TMI warning) - I have a retroverted uterus which puts my cervix at a funny angle and that's supposed to contribute to everything dripping out so easily. :)

I read a couple articles where holding up hips and lying in place for 20 minutes after IUI led to higher success rates that getting up and leaving right after, so that's what we do.

I use Wondfo and it's annoying because each test seems to look different when it's negative - either stark white, or a line with a different amount of reflectiveness but still white (evap line I guess), or even an almost pink shadow so you can see where the line is (even when it's impossible that it would be positive). Still, I got a package of OPKs and HPTs from Amazon for $40 over 6 months ago and still have a few left, so there's that.

For our own situation, we have a 1% chance/month with TI, 10-15%/month with IUI, and about 50% with IVF. Everyone is different, though.

I always used OPKs without an issue until one cycle it missed the surge and we had to rush to get an IUI in the next afternoon, with only a 17 hour wait since BDing. Total waste of stress and money. So this time we used a trigger shot and that helped a lot.

There's a range of bloodwork that can estimate ovarian reserve, plus a baseline ultrasound and seeing how your ovaries respond to meds can give more clues.

  • Thanks ladies..
@murrt I am not sure how they are going to test me since I haven't had AF in three years.  AF disappeared on her own once I started treatments and I haven't seen her since then.  My OB said that if that was the case, I can not ovulate on my own.  Hence why I am seeing a RE this month... DH is supposed to have a SA when we go in as well.   I know that they are planning on during a transvaginal (sp) ultrasounds and tons of b/w on my first visit, but wasn't told what they would be testing for.  I am thinking from what my OB who personally called my RE, they are starting my testing right away as my OB wants to speed my journey up as much as possible since I have so many high risk factors..
@rainbowbridge14 I am mainly using the Wondfo test just for my sake of mind. If I ever think it is positive, I will follow up with a FRER. I am hoping my clinic will just monitor my O for me, so that I don't miss it.

    Thanks for all the help!!

  • pregnancy/loss mentioned

Not having a cycle can be medicated.  I had an absent period when I began treatment and they gave me meds that started it right up.  However, since yours is due to chemo, I'm not sure if they will take the same approach.   The blood work and u/s will tell them everything they need to know so don't stress yourself out to much.

There have been studies to confirm and to debunk the whole putting your hips up thing.  Way I look at it.  How many unplanned pregnancies are there in the world?  Obviously, getting up doesn't prevent it.  My doc has me lay down for 5 mins after an IUI.  When I asked him if I should lay down after TI, he said it won't hurt anything so go ahead.

I've heard a lot of bad reviews on the Wondfo.  I stick with the Walmart cheapies.  They work quite well.  Back in may when I got my first BFP from the doc, my HCG was only 27.5 (pretty low) and the Walmart test picked it up.  As my level grew, the line darkened and as the level dropped (miscarriage) the test faded.  I was actually pretty impressed with them.

Just know that we all had these questions when we started this process.  That why have a great support system helps.  Hope you find all the answers you are looking for.

  • thanks @kallygirlie are you talking about just generic preg test or the ones that someone else mentioned the pink dye test( I am unsure what these are)? But thank you for the tips. I feel so confused and have so many questions. It seems like forever until I see my RE but I am sure he will answer the majority of my initial questions and then replace them with even more questions hah!

@fightersince83 thanks for the info. I had no idea that they only measured size and didn't actually count or have a test that told the exact number. I told you I am very new at this, so am  a little behind on learning everything.

  • The are pink dye test.  they are $.88 each.  There's only one brand that is that price so that takes out the guessing.  Trust me, we were all confused when we started.  your not alone, we are all here for you
