Gestational Diabeties? Just want some info.

Hello March mommies! I failed both my glucose test and they are considering me high risk GD. I didn't have this with my first one so just a few questions. I have my class on Monday at my OB to get all the info but what does it really mean? Does it hurt my little one any? What are the next steps to make sure I and baby are good.
Sorry if they sound like silly questions I just never 2nd guesses that I wouldn't pass my test and since I didn't just wanting to gear up for what's next :) thanks ladies!

Re: Gestational Diabeties? Just want some info.

  • I have GD with this pregnancy, diagnosed 2 weeks ago at 14 weeks and my previous pregnancy.

Basically what it means is now you're going to have be super careful with what foods you eat. With both pregnancies, I've been put on a low carb diet. Of course you have to watch your sugar intake, but the main concern is your carb intake since carbs breakdown into sugar. I'm almost positive you will have to meet with a nutritionist and they will sit down with you and explain how the diet works and what's okay to eat and what isn't. They will probably tell you about how many grams of carbs you're allowed each meal, so be prepared to be a label reading freak. Also they will tell you to up your water intake because that will help a lot as well. Their first step is to try to control it with the diet. My diet worked awesome with my first pregnancy, but not so much with thus one. I know I'm going to be put on medication.

Also, they will give you a blood sugar monitor. I poke my finger when I wake up, 1 hour after breakfast, lunch, and dinner to check my bloodsugar level. They usually want a fasting level of 90 or below and after meal level 120 and below. It sounds bad, but it isn't to bad at all.

It can be dangerous for the baby if you don't control it. You risk having a bigger baby, a baby born with low blood sugar, preterm labor, and even stillbirth. Don't worry though, that's if you don't take car e of yourself and control it and I know you'll do your best and your doctors will do everything to help you as well. Towards the end of your pregnancy they will monitor you closely. At 34 weeks I had to go in twice a week for a non stress test and ultrasounds. They just want to make sure baby is doing okay.

Sorry for the novel. I think I covered most things, but if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

  • No way to prevent. I don't eat horribly bad or tons of sweets. It just has to do with your extra blood flow during pregnancy and how your body breaks down sugar is what my nutritionist told me.
  • My midwife said that I won't have the test until week 24. I have a ridiculous craving for sugar like to the point that it's a distraction. Is this in anyway a sign of possibly having GD? Or am I just a sugar addict? Lol this didn't just happen with pregnancy I have always been a sugar fan but now it's just ridiculous like to the point where I can't eat anything else until I have sugar.

Try eating protein every time you have carbs - I think that helps stabilize your blood glucose. Craving sugar isn't a sign of GDM but is definitely the opposite of the diet you'd have to be on if you had it!
  • Veggies are good too! I don't have experience with GD but my dad had diabetes. Veggies are low carb and help if you are like me and don't like a lot of protein.
