Question for crafty mamas re. cutting fleece

I have a pseudo-robe that I've almost worn out. It's sort of like this one - it wraps and ties like a robe, but is really short. I consider it more of a sweatshirt than a robe and always wear pants with it. I love it because I could wrap it around DS when he was nursing as a baby and keep both of us warmer, but it was short enough that I wasn't really sitting on it, so I didn't have to be careful arranging it comfortably underneath me when I sat down to nurse. I have another LO on the way in Feb. and I can't find another one!

I am sooooo not crafty in the sewing department. I don't even know how to hem pants and the simplest of things (ex. sewing up a seam that has separated in one spot) take me forever and come out pretty lumpy. I also don't really want to spend the money on a seamstress to make me something. I was thinking of buying a fleece robe and then just cutting it to the length I want. I know I've cut fleece before and it hasn't unraveled, though that was more of a tablecloth-type thing and not actual clothing. Would just cutting a short fleece robe to the desired length work ok?

Would this be about the length you want? You could always hem it with a stretch thread so it doesn't lump.

Hmmm... the site says that hits at mid-thigh, and my current "robe" doesn't actually cover my bottom when I'm standing. (Hence the always-wear-pants thing.)

What's this stretch thread that you mention? Is it an iron on or something? I wasn't sure if an iron on kind of hem would be strong / durable enough, as this item would get heavy use and frequent machine washing.

If it is something that requires actual sewing, I'm not sure that's a good option. I'm looking for a solution that doesn't require a needle. Seriously, needles and I should stay far apart. I can bake, but that's where craftiness and I part ways!

Ha. Yeah it involves a needle and machine. Stretch thread is a nylon thread that stretches with your stretchy fabrics. So you avoid bunching and lumping. I don't see why you would even have to hem if it was a fabric like jersey knit, sweater material or even a fleece. Those normally will just roll a bit at the end and takes some wear to unravel.

fleece won't fray/unravel, but it may shed everytime you wash it. you could also get some hem tape, you put it on, fold you hem and iron it. When it gets hot it release glue and sticks. Or you could buy liquid stitch, it's a glue made for fabric. It comes out in a very thin bead and stays soft and pliable. it holds up to washing also. you just hem it and glue it and let it dry,

I would be afraid that if you cut off the bottom of a fleece robe that the seems would come unsewn because it'd no longer have the part that is back stitched which "locks" the threads from unraveling. I hope that makes sense.
