Uterus cramps? Contraction? What?

I'm 14 weeks along. The past few days, I've noticed that when I lay on my back (I think it's always when I'm on my back) I sometimes get a knot in my uterus. I know, weird way to describe it, but I don't know what else to call it! I'll feel my uterus tighten up and when I put my hand on my belly I can actually feel a knot or a bump form, seemingly always on the right side so far. It doesn't really hurt so much as feel like a lot of pressure, and if I rub it gently, the muscle or whatever it is relaxes and smoothes away. Any ideas what this could be? Is it a really early Braxton hicks type contraction? Baby is no where near big enough to push against my tummy that way yet. I'm not really concerned since it doesn't hurt and eases after just a moment, but I'm really curious!

Maybe a cyst? Have u had an ultrasound? I have a pretty big one on the back of my ovary and I can feel it in my back sometimes. Ask when u go for your next ultrasound. Dosnt sound too serious.

  • I had Braxton Hicks starting at around 16 weeks with my third pregnancy, so it could be that. Drink plenty of water, because I've heard you can contract from dehydration.
  • could be Braxton Hicks.

I've had then earlier and earlier with each pregnancy. They started at 11w this time (16w last time).

I still got to my 39w induction with a giant baby even though the BH started so soon.  as long as they don't hurt and don't get too rhythmic - you are good.

I have the same thing. Glad you asked. Not sure what's going on
  • With my second pregnancy Braxton Hicks started at 12 weeks. If you are curious you could try not rubbing it and see if it still goes away fairly quickly. My braxton hicks were usually about 30-60 sec.

  • Saw my doc today and she pointed out the only tissue in our bodies that is both ligament and muscle is the one that holds your ute in place. I've had that tight and cramppy like, and right side tighter than left today. but no idea what a bh feels like to compare.

She said to gently massage daily as things in there are expanding pretty rapidly right now.

It's the line from your belly button-ish to just below your pelvic bones. Like an upside down V.

Not sure if that explains or helps what you have......

  • Totally bh. I get them whenever I'm in a car!
  • Could it be round ligament pain? Is it a sharp feeling? I get it when standing up, not lying down though so maybe bh is more like it.
  • Thanks for the replies ladies - I was guessing probably bh contractions, just a newbie at this so not sure! I have been a little dehydrated the past couple days due to extreme nausea so that was probably causing the cramping.
