2nd Trimester

Do you recycle?

In efforts to "go green" I want to start recycling. Our town currently doesn't enforce recylcing. What do you recycle? I reuse all of my newspapers in my classroom for art and such. Plastic bottles? Glass bottles? Cardboard? Do you take them to a center? Do you get $ for them? TIA

Re: Do you recycle?

  • You should ask the Eco-Friendly Family board.

  • I just recycle what the city will pick up - plastic bottles, cardboard, aluminum cans, and newspaper.  I also bring plastic grocery bags to the recycling area at the grocery store.  I don't get money for them.
  • We're recycling nuts. Our township has a center so we used to sort and drop it off there but we just switched trash companies and the new one has curbside recycling. We just put it in a seperate bin and they pick it up with the trash, which is greener than us actually having to drive it somewhere.

And no we don't get paid for it. I know that DH does sometime save the cans and gets a few dollars from those at some center.

  • it's the law where I live. The program is pretty good. (it better be since my taxes are ridiculous) They give you a big bin. You throw all your recyclables in it. They pick it up once a week. Glass, cans, plastic, steel, paper and cardboard tied in a bundle. No batteries though.

That's awesome! Where do you live?

  • We recycle about 2x as much stuff as we throw away-- cans, bottles, aluminum anything, paper, plastic, cardboard, etc. ?Ours is curbside pickup and its just a blue large garbage can instead of a green one. ?Its easy once you get started!?

  • Apparently, some people recycle their placentas by fishing with them... don't forget about that.

We have a bin - we recycle plastic, alumnium, glass, and cardboard. No money received.

Ditto.  I try to remember my canvas bags.

  • We have curbside, its great!  We put our recycling bin right out with our trash and it gets picked up the same day.

We take returnables back to the store.

  • Oh yes!  We MAYBE have one bag of garbage a week.  We recycle everything - paper, plastic, glass, cans, bottles, etc.  We just got home from SIL's house for a week and it was unbelievable how much garbage they had when they didn't recycle.  Both DH and I commented on it.

It's a law here that we have to recycle. I'm pretty sure it's all of NY state. When I lived it GA, we didn't have recycling. Kind of freaked me out at first.

  • We recycle tons of stuff. Our city just switched to single stream recycling so we have a 90 gallon cart that everything goes in- paper, plastic (any kind), glass, aluminum, steel, tin, cardboard and boxboard. They pick it up every other Monday. Our trash cart is smaller than the recycling one and it usually isn't even full.
  • The house we rent in has 5 people in 3 separate households. For all of us we have one standard curb-side trash bin, one standard curb-side recycle bin, and a smaller compost bin.  We aggressively recycle...if we didn't there wouldn't be room for anyone else's trash! Our in-laws have trouble understanding this when they visit. Pretty much everything here can be recycled. It's nice when the homeless people come around and take our cans and sometimes our bottles so we can fit more in the bin.

  • We recycle everything but glass.  The recycling co. picks up curbside once a week just like the trash service.  You don't get $$.

  • Absolutely! When I see people throwing away recyclable materials I want to cry. We recycle everything and it's picked-up curbside once a week. I believe it's also the law in my city as well. It takes 5 extra seconds to break-down cardboard boxes and put them in the recycling bin, and no extra time for aluminum, plastic bottles, glass, newspaper, junk mail, and magazines.
  • I second the eco friendly family board.

I do recycle. My town makes us pay $1 per trash bag (we have to get special orange bags at local grocery store or walmart) and they have curbside recycling pickup.  I recycle plastic containers #1 and 2, all paper products (newspapers, junk mail, magazines, cardboard, etc) and cans (soda pop cans, soup cans, etc). My town just stopped recycling glass, so we collect it and take it to my IL's house, where they have glass recycling. It is amazing how much you don't have to throw away once you start! Happy recycling.

  • My DH brought recycling into our home as where he was raised it was required by law and it was pretty much second nature to him. We went to our local town hall and they gave us all the information we needed to get started. In addition, he gave me the book "Gorgeously Green". Quick, easy read and, while I don't follow everything it practices, I did learn some great tricks to ease into our home life.
  • You can recycle anything that is clean and has the little triangle with a number on it. Usually it's on the bottom of plastic containers and such...
  • Yes we recycle - Our township picks up paper and plastics bi-weekly.
  • It is mandatory here, and we recycle everything we can. We actually have it so we generally only have one kitchen garbage bag each week. We recycle cardboard, paper, aluminum cans, plastics, etc. in one big bin. Then we have a smaller bin for all glass. We also have yard waste pickup and can put food waste in with our yard waste. So we compost all of our non-meat based food waste. We can also put food soiled paper and cardboard in with our yard waste.
  • We did when we lived in our apartment.  And we still separate everything out out of habit, but our garbage/recycling here all goes in one container and the garbage company sorts out everything after pick-up.  We put paper in a bag or box and put all the cans, glass, and plastic together.
  • We recycle all paper, cardboard, glass and metal items such as tin cans through the garbage recycle pick up.

We recycle all of our redeemable glass, cans, and plastic at a center. Yes, we get money for those items and it goes into my baby account.

  • Our apartment complex doesn't offer recycling so we store everything in our garage and drop it off at the center once a month. We recycle cardboard, paper, newspaper, cans, plastic (#1 and #2), glass, etc.
