Supplementing for slow weight gain

I had my baby's one month pedi appt today - the doc said his weight gain was a little slow - birth weight was 7 lbs 8 oz, first week appt was 7 lbs, 2nd week 7 lbs 4 oz and now at 4 weeks he's at 8 lbs. my question is, first of all should I worry? Second, how much and how often should I supplement pumped milk? She suggested pumping after feedings and giving him another oz an hour later. Um, he eats like every hour and a half...I barely have time to do anything else as it is. So far I've been offering the breast more and encouraging him to nurse longer and he's been less fussy today so I'm thinking that might be helping. I will supplement though if I need to. Would rather not use formula if I don't have to...

Re: Supplementing for slow weight gain

  • Great, thanks! I have a LC appt on thurs - I'm thinking the pediatricians office worried me for nothing. I'll continue to feed him on demand like I have been doing.

  • We saw a nurse practitioner at that appointment - our regular doctor seemed to think he was gaining fine and told me not to change anything. We have also had issues with the medical assistant weighing him and coming up with a number 4 oz different than what the doctor saw when she weighed him so who knows if it's even right!
