Mid-back pain?

I know we've covered pain and not sleeping and all of that.  I have been very lucky until recently.  No lower back pain, no sciatica. It's actually been pretty ok.  Lately, though, I have this killer mid-back pain, especially when sitting too long or sleeping.  I never bought a body pillow because I hadn't needed one. Now, I think it's time.

Any tips or tricks for getting through the day? A lumbar support pillow doesn't work because it's too low... I'm in several offices each week, so I don't have a constant seat that I can alter.  On days that I'm with patients, and walking around, I'm usually ok.  I sit on a yoga ball at home.  Stretching my spine doesn't work because of this big baby in the way.  I wonder if it's too late in the pregnancy to start prenatal yoga?

Any advice is appreciated.  Keep in mind, I'm a nurse, and proper body mechanics/posture when lifting/bending is part of my training.  I'm in appropriate shoes. I'm just so uncomfortable.  And the sleep thing is killing me.  I'm up every hour or so.  And when it's not my back, I have to pee... not that you guys can help with that.

For everyone who has been experiencing this for weeks now, I'm sorry.

Re: Mid-back pain?

  • Do you feel like the pain is spinal or muscular?  Is it your erectors?

I got some great advice from others here about this issue a bit ago--a recent massage has helped, and I'm going to mention this to my doctor st my next appointment. I use a lacrosse ball at least twice a day against the wall to work around any tense areas. I also have a lumbar cushion that I slide up to the mid-back and have found relief by pressing against it gently as I sit. Some days all this helps, some days it doesn't. I wonder if a rib that seems slightly out of line may be the culprit in my case. I often also have unbearable pain/pressure by the end of the day, for me on my mid-upper left side. Good luck, I completely sympathize!

ETA: I've also just started sleeping on top of a layer of pillows and it really is so much more comfortable. Although now I have a new problem of one arm falling asleep when I'm sleeping on my side. It's always something. ;)

  • @hufflepuff42-  I got one, but I can't sit in it!  It digs in at the bottom..  And it claims to work on LBP, which isn't really my issue.  But maybe I'll give it another shot.

  • I would suggest massage, maybe even a chiropractor or acupuncture. My doctor told me I couldn't use icy-hot but she recommended magsoothium.

If it's "killer" pain...I would definitely talk to your doctor. Mine is more constant discomfort/awareness (I had this pre-pregnancy...I have terrible posture) but a combination of massage and chiro visits really helps.

  • The only thing that has brought long-term(ish) relief is going to the chiropractor for me. That was back in August, and just today, my OB suggested looking into acupuncture (the pain is now starting to crop back up). I've never tried it, but I'm going to try to go next week. As far as daily management, I just try not to be in the same position for too long. Reclining is really the only position where I feel normal, but even then, after a while it gets uncomfortable (plus, it's not feasible for me to be reclined all day!) Sleep-wise, I'm actually still sleeping mostly on my stomach, maybe a quarter turned to my side, hugging a pillow, and that's relatively comfortable. If it's really bad, I'll take a Tylenol. Good luck to you!

  • I have lower back pain this time but with DS I had it the middle. I've officially moved to the couch and did so in 3rd tri with my first also and I have found I sleep much better and my back hasn't hurt near as bad. I miss DH but I need my sleep.

  • I'm another vote for a massage. It will feel great even if it doesn't solve the problem completely. I have heard about going to a chiropractor to get adjusted might help. I have not done this but would love to.
Also, sleeping slightly elevated has worked for me. DH got me a snoogle. I think it's too "thin" to get my cuddle on. But I roll that bad boy up like a Cinnabon and put my pillow on top. I was plesently surprised how well I was able to sleep. I was worried my butt would go numb or something but Nope.

  • This may sound weird but could you be wearing the wrong bra? I know the girls get heavy, especially the further you get along. Maybe it's time to upgrade the size or get a better bra for support?
Just based on my own experience.
  • A chiropractor that specializes in the Webster technique is who I've been seeing for all my aches and pains and it really is wonderful!!! I feel so much better since I've been seeing her consistently. Also, I don't think it's too late to try yoga. Good luck- I hope you get some relief!

Ha! Boobs are the same size. I'm in the same bras. They're still little. Never had heavy boobies...

  • That's where my back hurts too. Honestly any time I can pop it, it helps relieve pressure. And at the end of the day I put a heating pad on it.
