February 2015 Moms

I know we have discussed this before but... Bottle help!

I am sorry to be bringing this up again, but I don't know how to search for past threads. (Mobile user)
I plan on breast feeding and I am a FTM. I won't be pumping a lot because I am a stay at home. I went to look for registry items, and the bottle isle scared me a little, there where too many options. I don't know what size, and what brand I will need, when I do pump! Any advice would be appreciated.

  • With my daughter it was all trial and error to find a bottle she would take. The Born Free bottles worked the best. Not many parts and easy to clean. I had a couple in each size. She was an exception because she never took a bottle well. She preferred the boob. I'm hoping this one is less picky.
  • I also used Dr browns. Most pumps have good bottles that come with them. DS had no trouble with the Medela bottles. Remember that some kids don't like taking a bottle though so it's best to buy a few different types from a few different brands abs open them as you need them to see what your baby will take.

  • I would suggest registering for 1 or 2 bottles of a couple of different brands.  With DD we registered for the entire medela set thinking it would jive with my pumping plans.  DD refused all of the medela bottles.  She ended up liking Nuk brand which has an orthodontic nipple.  The nipple size does not fit with other bottle brands, so we ended up buying that entire set as well.  Along the way we tried Dr. Browns and Playtex drop-ins.  You may be able to get away with registering for bottles and just changing the nipples if they are universal.

  • The consultant at Babies R Us recommended playtex.... They have 5 different nipples that work with their bottles... So it reduces expenses of the baby doesn't like the nipple... Good luck!
  • I used Playtex bottle with drop in liners with my first and had really good luck with them. She had such bad colic and it was really helpful….it was almost 14 years ago also so I'm sure they have other's now.
I used Advent bottles with my second and really enjoyed them also. I'm thinking I going to use the advent again, but I'm not 100% sure
  • Another vote from me for playtex. We used ventaires.

  • I did a lot of research on best bottles for breastfed babies and chose from there. I also didn't want a plastic bottle. I went with the avent glass one and the como tomo silicone. Who knows if little dude will take them but I've heard good things :)
  • When I did my registry one of the sales reps told me to get the bottle I'd like with several different nipples for it and then get a start up kit of a different brand. She said what I don't use can always be returned!
  • When we first did our baby registery, we put everything of one type of bottle we liked the sound of (Avent Naturals). Then after suggestions from various other moms, we ended up changing all of that. Now instead, we have registered for 3-packs of 5 different popular bottle brands from Babies R Us, figuring that we'd have them around in case we had to work systematically through bottle brands until we figured out what the baby liked, then return what the baby wouldn't use and buy the rest of what we need.

One mom said that in her experience Babies R Us will take back bottles that baby refuses, even if they've been used. I have to check on that, though.

  • I wish I had done the route of try one bottle of several different brands rather than buying a set. DD ended up not being able to use ANY of the wide neck nipples and we had to find bottles that were standard size nipple which is a pain because 90% of bottles out there are wide neck. By the time we had figured out it was a standard vs wide neck issue, I was sick of trying bottles and we settled on some cheap Gerber ones and refused to shell out $$ for the more expensive Dr. Browns bottles. Cheap bottles suck but I use the Dr. Brown's nipples in the Gerber bottles. Works well.

To me it boils down to nipple shape and size. Make sure you get a few different kinds that are pretty different in shape. Also, make sure you get the slow flow nipples to start off with and nothing with a level 2 or 3.
  • DS was easy we only bought the one type playtex ventaire and he never had an issue. He was exclusively breast feed until 3 months when he got pumped milk in a bottle.

  • Honestly, I'd wait to buy bottles until after the baby is born. I made the mistake of being the mom that bought everything on the planet. DD refused a bottle until about 6 months & I'm sure she gave up fighting the bottle because she was starving. The only bottle she liked was the ones that came with the breast pump...... :)
