Ammonia question

I just changed LO CD's and I smelled ammonia when I took it off. This was a newish OS Simplex.

LO is 16+ months old, so could this just be toddler pee smelling stronger? It was quite definiately ammonia though, not burn your eyes but still very strong.

Does that mean I have issues I need to address? I did not notice the ammonia while he was wearing it.

TIA!

Re: Ammonia question

  • If it's just a normal diaper change after an hour or two than maybe. I would do a good hot water strip. What's your wash routine?

@RrrrrachelI wash with Charlies, one pre-wash (no Charlies) and a hot wash with 2 extra rinses. We have hard water so I do a RLR strip on occasion when I think I need it but rarely so. I have not had any issues before and as this is a new CD, maybe worn 4-5 times before then I am hoping it is just a once off.

  • Yeah it could just be a once off if your kid hadn't had as much to drink as usual or something. If your prewash is cold you can try warm or you can try adding charlies booster, too, if you have more problems.

  • Thanks. I use the booster too, forgot to add that. Fx though, I will know once he wakes up and I smell the next CD. Oh the joys of motherhood, sniffing diapers!

  • The ammonia smell is normal.  If it ever burns your eyes or nose then its a problem.  But it doesn't sound like that's happening.

As an FYI - you may consider switching detergent.  I live in an area with hard water and Charlies caused a TON of buildup on my diapers which ultimately led to them stinking pretty bad.  I now use Tide and haven't had any problems with my dipes for over 2 yrs now.
