breech

Had my anatomy scan on Monday and baby boy is breech. I know he has plenty of time to turn on his own but my first never did. Is there anything I can do to turn him? I'll try spinning babies again but it didn't work for dd. I was hoping for a vbac but if he doesn't turn I'll be okay with a repeat c section.

  • I was breech at 36 with contractions. Went to L&d. My doct met me there. He hooked me up to monitors to show the consistency of contractions. He decided to turn ky son manually. He gave me a shot of pain meds. And had ultrasound tech there observing as he turned him. They had me layin upside for like 2wks before this and playin music at bottom of my belly. It didn't work. Doct said after turning him not to lay flat or too angled til deliverey that'd give him room to turn back.
  • I really wouldn't worry about this at this point. I think after 32 weeks is when my OB told me to worry about a breech presentation. Luckily, DD was head down from 28 weeks on.

  • I'll start by saying this is a topic I'm not overly familiar with. However I would be concerned about efforts to turn a baby that doesn't want to turn bc there may be a reason for that, such as a short umbilical cord.

  • My SIL went through the same thing. The doc had hoped my niece would turn on her own but it was better that she stayed breech because her cord was wrapped around her neck. You still have some time though.

  • I was also breech at my A/S a couple weeks ago. Doctor said not to worry about it until week 34 but when I asked my Bradley class, they all suggested going to the chiropractor. But I'll definitely have to check it spinning babies!

  • I had a breech baby -> c sec with DD and did EVERYTHING, including the version, chiro, spinning babies, accupuncture etc.  Nothing worked but this time I started going to the chiro from the beggining to open up my pelvis and so far so good, I would also like a vbac but Im prepared mentally for anything...
  • I wouldn't worry about it now, both my kiddos were transverse at the A/S and my OB told me not to worry about it at all.  They have plenty of time to change positions a couple of times.

  • My sweet boy is breech right now as well. I would probably not be very concerned at all b/c its so early but I have a firbroid so that makes it slightly less likely that he will turn. :-( We shall see. But theres no point in worrying about it.

  • I had a version at 36 weeks.  It was pretty simple. I went in to L&D, Dr gave me a shot of pain meds, I got a shot to relax my uterus, and she turned him in 5 minutes.
There was a very low chance that the shot to relax my uterus could have started labor, but that didn't happen.  Also, one thing that made the likelihood of the version to be more successful was that I had a high level of amniotic fluid.

  • Thank you all for the responses!  I'm going to wait it out and see how he does, I'm just nervous because dd never turned around. I do have a tilted ute so maybe it's more comfy in there that way haha.

@mommy510 did your OB do the version or did he refer you out? My ob last time advised me against it so I didn't do it.

  • Last time DS was breech until 34 weeks and managed to flip himself around. There's time yet for it to happen on it's own.

  • At our Bradley course, they talk about different exercises/positions to help the baby move into the preferred position. Some of it may be similar to Spinning Babies; I'm not sure. Lots and lots of pelvic tilts, tailor sitting, and just bending forward occasionally. Gravity can help to move your baby into the proper position with these techniques, but they just help. It's not a guarantee.

But again, I wouldn't worry about it now. When I had my A/S, my baby moved from anterior to breech and back a couple of times just during the scan.

  • My little guy was breech at my a/s scan as well. Not worried about it. If he doesn't turn himself by full term I trust my medical team to take care of us.
  • She was laying breech for a while (had 2 scans before 18w). When we had out follow up at 21w she was head down. There is time to move. I wasn't too worried. I have been doing pelvic rocks, etc since about 20w so not sure if that helped.

I just had this same thing come up with my a/s! I ended up seeing my OB 2 days after my a/s and was bugging her about it cos I'm with you on the VBAC train. She said to try prenatal yoga, stay as active as I can without exhausting myself and to start doing exercises with a birthing ball. Is spinning babies the same as the yoga or birthing ball stuff? I didn't try any of that with DS and didn't really know anything about it. I'm just starting to learn about all of it now, in all honesty. She's also not huge on the EVC process but said that worst case scenario she'll try it. I'm fighting a repeat c-section tooth and nail but obviously I'll give in if that's what ends up being the best option for my little man.

Acupuncture. Spinning babies. My MW told us to start doing the rebozo sifting thing from the spinning babies website daily or at least a few times a week starting now through the end.
What website did you use? I'm starting to research options and definitely wanna check this out!

  • DD was breech on US last time and was head down by delivery. 20-25% of babies are breech prior to 28 weeks, so I really wouldn't worry about it. A version can be attempted in the 3rd tri (usually 36-37 weeks), but the babe is going to do what s/he wants until later on. Try not to worry too much about it right now!
  • Thank you and the rebozo thing has me cracking up! All I can imagine is my son bouncing around like the ball in a pinball machine hahaha
