Abdominal U/S showed sac but nothing else...

So I went in for my first prenatal appt yesterday and the doctor said she wanted to do a quick 'informal' sono. Just to 'confirm' a pregnancy. She placed the probe on my stomach and only saw the gestational sac... no fetal pole and no yolk sac. From my LMP, I should be about 7 weeks along so Im confused and worried. Ive read some threads that have spoken negatively about abdominal ultrasound being done so early in a pregnancy but Ive also seen it turn out fine. Has anyone experienced something like this and not miscarried...?

One previous M/C.

Re: Abdominal U/S showed sac but nothing else...

  • Were you tracking ovulation? When did you get your BFP?

    Fucking bump!!!!

  • BFP on Sept 21st. I actually noticed my EWCM... And that was the only time we had sex that month... earlyish Sept. Do you get that before or after you ovulate? How many days?

You can get EWCM all throughout your cycle, you can't base ovulation on tha. If you were exactly 4 weeks when you got your positive you wouldn't quite be 7 weeks yet. Some people get positives before 4 weeks so you could be even earlier. So basically you are in that in-between point, I'm sorry. I'm not familiar with abdominal us's so early, my dr has never done one until closer to 10 weeks, I always have transvaginal.

I hope you get some answers soon, limbo sucks.

    Fucking bump!!!!
  • No temping... No real tracking. The informal sono was just to see 'what she could see' so she didn't measure anything but she set me up for a dating sonogram next Wednesday (10/15). Your right... I don't know for sure how far along I am... I'm just nervous.
  • another thing to think about is that most of us I believe have had transvaginal ultrasound to see things I'm not so sure that abdominal shows as much this early. Also I would like to apologize for my lack of punctuation. I am using talk to text and it sucks

  • My doctor did an "informal sono" last night at my appt.  She had done one for my previous pregnancies as well.

It was hard for her to figure out how to zoom, or focus, or get a good picture at all.  We were able to see that there was a baby, a flicker, and wiggling.  That was it.  I've also had a "formal sono" at 10 weeks and you could see a lot more.

What I'm trying to say - is that those informal ones are hard at this point.  I told her that if we couldn't find a heartbeat "you know I'm going to demand for Jeff (the real guy) to see me tomorrow."  She laughed and said she knew that.

  • How far along are you Lexi?

I honestly believe I ovulated later then what I thought. I have had no complications, no bleeding, no nothing... Now I'm concerned about my HCG level being so high if that's the case. UGH... Just never stops!
  • You said you had sex only one time the month you got your bfp right? Do you remember that date? My LMP is way off, but I know my conception date so that made it much easier to get in the range of implantation.

  • This happened to me this pregnancy, everything turned out to be okay. Not sure why it happens! Hope is does for you too!
  • I had my first u/s at 7 1/2 weeks. The ultrasound tech said the baby is just barely visible at that point. I wouldn't worry just yet.
  • @erikanisha - I was 10weeks1day yesterday.  I'm pretty certain that had my doctor tried to do what she did yesterday at 7 weeks, it would have never worked.

I had a "formal" sono at 8 weeks and everything was a lot more clear.

  • @nykkybaby

Yes. It was Sept 6th or 7th... or both. So how long does it take to get pregnant?

OH MY GOSH! I'm elated that I'm not alone in this!
  • @riescholz That's good to know! Thank you!
  • I'm sorry you are dealing with this. I'm going through something similar. My IVF was on 9/5 and I'm supposed to be 7 weeks 0 days today.
  • @CMH25

It sucks... This whole waiting game sucks. Did you have a sono that showed anything?
  • First u/s today. They said no heartbeat, but then the tech said she found a faint flicker that wasn't measurable on the machine. They are having me come back Monday so I can be certain and have no doubts before we move forward with prompting my body to recognize what happened.
  • Oh honey.... There is still hope! A faint flicker is still something to hold onto. Ill be praying for you love.

    >:D<
  • I had an abdominal sono at 7 weeks and was able to see the sac, baby and hb.

It does sound like you conceived later than you thought. Also, keep in mind sperm can live up to 5 days in the right CM. So, if you got your BFP on September 21st, you could have ovulated as late as September 11th, just based on when most women start seeing bfps (usually from 10dpo and forward).

  • Lurking from March15, i don't usually post on other boards so excuse me for intruding but I have a lot of experience with what you're going through as it's happened to me twice. Unfortunately both were miscarriages for me, but my sister is due in late feb like me and she had exactly the same issue you are having and there's definitely a baby in there, he's a healthy boy so don't lose hope. Either way it turns out you will be ok and it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you or your ability to carry a baby. I'm a STM and I had multiple miscarriages in a row before becoming pregnant with my rainbow girl due this feb 23rd. Best of luck to you, I'll say a prayer that your baby is ok, I think the growth they saw is an excellent sign
