June 2015 Moms

First appt and ultrasound pic!

We had our first appointment on Monday and got our first glimps of our little jelly bean with a heart beat!!! So relieved!!!! Doctor confirmed due date of June 1st so I was only 6w0d on Monday and he said that he was a little surprised to see the heart beat just because it was still pretty early.

He said that there is a less that 5% chance of anything going wrong now! He said that the next important development phase is between week 7-8 when all the organs develop. I have a follow-up appointment on the 23rd (at 8 1/2 weeks) so he said if everything looks good then then there would be less than a 2% chance of a loss! Yay!!!
(I'm super anxious because this is my sixth pregnancy and so far I only have my sweet 3 year old...)
But I have raging morning sickness with this one and I am EXHAUSTED so I think this one is going to stick! YAYAYAY!!!!

  • Aww congrats....how amazing and exciting! :)
  • Congratulations! So very exciting! I'm a little jealous. My RE is having me wait until I'm 8 weeks and it is torture! @mclanin28‌, and internal ultrasound will probably be necessary that early. It is also called a vaginally ultrasound, and even though the wand looks big and scary they just put a very little bit in. You feel it but it won't be painful. Disclaimer: my left ovary hides behind my uterus so when they look and that it hurts, but your uterus should be easy to see.

  • Congrats! My Dr won't do an ultrasound until 8 weeks :(
  • Yes, it was an internal ultrasound. From my experience, the earliest they will try doing an external ultrasound is 9 weeks... But even at that point it can be less accurate depending on how much belly fat you may have in that area and sometimes where the baby is.

If you have never had one before, don't worry it is no big deal. It is WAY less intrusive then a PAP... Plus you get to see your baby so the payoff is wye better too! =D
  • This is absolutely amazing.
  • So exciting! I'm 6w2d and don't have my first appointment until 10/23. I'm not a very patient person either! Haha it's really good to know about the vag u/s. I didn't know that. Any other tips for what I should expect at the first appt? This is my first pregnancy!! Thanks.
  • Amazing:) I'm 6.5w and had my first transvaginal ultrasound today. They didn't see a heartbeat but said not to worry as it is probably just too early. I can't wait to see the heartbeat.
  • ahhhh! I'm so excited and happy for you! Congrats!!!!!! <3

  • I have internal ultra sounds due to fertility and find out tomorrow at my 6 week appointment whether it's twins or a single baby. There were two sacs at 5 weeks but one was questionably viable. I hope I also see a heartbeat as well!! I am very anxious. Good luck to you!!
  • So sorry for your losses but very glad you have such a good and reassuring OB!  Congratulations on such a positive US!

  • @songsolove‌- what happens on your first appointment I think can vary a lot based on who your provider is and your circumstances. For example, I have Kaiser and I have had two different experiences. The first appointment that I had with my regular OB (when I had my daughter) was the longest prenatal appointment by far. It started with them asking for a urine sample that they then tested in the room with a dip stick to check for protein or sugar in the urine. They also have me a clip board with a bunch of paperwork to fill out, it went over past pregnancies, STDs, health conditions, etc.... Basically anything that could effect this pregnancy. Then the doc came in and we talked about the first day of last period and discussed a due date. They did an ultrasound to check on the baben and they usually will print a couple pictures for you to take home. During the ultrasound they will also look at your ovaries. The ultrasound usually only takes about 3 minutes... Then after that they will go over your paperwork and see if there is anything on there you need to discuss, like if you put that you smoke they would talk about quitting and classes and stuff like that. They also go over other classes that are available like an early pregnancy class or a "pregnafit" class. These classes are great because you learn a lot more than the doctor is able to tell you in your short appointment time. They will then schedule the classes you want and give you some fliers about pregnancy and baby's development. They also schedule your next appointment for one month later. They also may or may not talk to you about getting your flu shot or Rogam shot (if you are rh negative and have had spotting). Most don't get their Rogam shot until about 20 something weeks. Then at the end of your appointment they sent me down to the lab to have a gambit of blood draws... I think it was like 8 vials worth! Then... Done!

However, with my most recent pregnancy I al working with the center for reproductive health and they did not do any of that really... They just did my blood pressure, weight, and then the ultrasound. Once the ultrasound looked good then the doc asked if I had any questions and he gave me some advice. Then he offered to have one more follow up appointment with them before being transferred back to my regular OB. So no lab tests or classes or anything. So now I just wait until my follow up appointment and then go from there...

But again, depending on what kind of doctor you have or who your provider is then your experience could be totally different....
  • congrats!! im super jealous you got to see your bean so early!! <3

  • If they can't get a clear view from the outside then they usually go for the internal. I had one yesterday at 5 wks 1 day and you can definitely see more! Good luck! :)
  • @weluvbabymae‌ Thank you! That's good to know. I have a midwife and guess I'll find out her specific routine soon. Is blood work not a necessity at the first appt?
