EBF baby suddenly dropped from 50 percentile to 25 percentile in weight gain at 6 months?

Any one deal with this or have suggestions to help with more weight gain?

Back ground
DD was born 4 weeks early at 5 lbs 1 oz but has always been a great nurser and was up to 12 lbs 13 oz by 4 months. I went back to work at 4 months and since then she normally eats 16-20 oz of pumped milk per day at daycare and also nurses twice before bed, once in the morning before drop off and about half the time she will also nurse once at night. I know that I do not have a supply issue because I am easily keeping up with pumping milk and she has milk on her lips when done nursing/burps and is satisfied, I can also still squeeze or pump some milk out after a nursing session. My guess is that she must be eating at least 25-30 oz a day since she is nursing 3-4 times on top of what she eats at daycare. She is just starting some solids but not enough to even count at this point, more less tasting things. She is happy and healthy and has plenty of wet/dirty diapers.

She just had her 6 month check up and only gained one pound since 4 months. we were very surprised, even her doctor was surprised as she has always gained well and eats plenty.they were so surprised that they weighed her a second time to be sure. she also didn't really grown much longer either (1 inch I think). So she weighed 13 lbs 14 oz and was 24 inches long. She has a nice belly that sticks out and nice little rolls on her legs, chubby cheeks etc. We have to go back in 6 weeks for another weight check in and if she doesn't gain appropriately "they will start to be more concerned and look in to things more".

Anyone else deal with a similar issue? Any advice as to how to help her gain more weight again? I don't really want to supplement with formula as I still enjoy nursing her and know that I am making plenty enough milk to feed her.

  • I had a similar issue with my DS, but it was when he was 7-9 months old, so his 9 month check up. He had always been at 50th %ile, but went down to 25th for weight. He was 17 pounds forever... literally like 2 months and he weighed the same the whole time.

I knew he was eating well and was also taking 16 oz of pumped milk during the day and nursing 3 times with me and overnight as well (just like your little one)- it was just a weird plateau. I asked my pedi about it and they were not worried. He had a little growth spurt shortly thereafter and is up to 21 lbs now at 11 months.

All this to say, sometimes I think their growth just plateaus despite what we are feeding them. I think it's good that your doc is following up in six weeks, but I would just go with your gut on this one and keep nursing unless your doctor tells you that you need to do otherwise when you see him again.
