Adopted family holiday gift questions

I know this is kinda personal, so feel free to PM me. We just got told that Reese has been chosen to be "adopted" for Christmas. DH talked to our local cancer organization, and they told him. The children have to be in treatment and they have to have enough private donors to adopt families.

Anyway, has anyone ever done this before? What kind of things are on the list? Asked for? I mean she is 3, so when I asked what toys she wanted--amazingly she didn't say something outlandish (i.e. a horse) She did say the two ice-skating Frozen dolls. Would that be appropriate for the list?

I am floored with her being accepted, and I hate asking for things for her, so I have no clue what to ask.

Re: Adopted family holiday gift questions

  • The few times that I have been part of doing a family adoption the kids usually asked for a toy or two in the price range of those dolls, some winter weather gear (jacket, sweater, knit cap, gloves), and something educational like a book, puzzle or game. We often filled in the baskets with other goodies like coloring books and little candies.

That is so awesome that she was chosen. I hope that her basket lights up her beautiful face :)

I triple checked with DH, that if Reese was selected it didn't mean another kid wasn't. They were doing this because there was enough private donors and she was still in treatment. Truthfully, she doesn't need anything. We are VERY lucky to have family that completely spoils her at the holiday. And Reese is at the perfect age still, that even dollar store items are VERY exciting to her.

I just don't want her requests to be outllandish.

We do angel tree often and a lot of them are filled with x-box, playstation 3, nintendo ds, etc.

it seems parents are either asking for cheap items, such as t-shirts, or small gifts or extremely outlandish. $20 dolls are perfectly fine.  You could also ask the charity if they have any suggestions as far as price guidelines, etc.

Not sure how your program works, but I know with Angel Tree, our company picks up 150-200 requests, puts them on a card, and people can pick what they want to buy. We see everything imaginable on those requests, anywhere from very cheap, to very expensive, to very vague. Typically, the ones people think they can do for under $50 go first.

I think what you're asking for is really reasonable. It's always nice to see the goodwill that comes out during the holidays - especially when it's from someone on the receiving end.

ETA: I am not as illiterate as my original post made me seem.
I THINK the way it works is they set each child with a private donor; from what my husband explained sounded like a business, etc. They don't do this program every year--only when they have enough private donors.
