Cloth Diapering

ON Recs

We've been using GMD fitteds (red edge) for overnight, and DS has started leaking out of them (totally soaked, no issues with absorbancy or fit) about half the time. He has lots of room in the waist, but is already starting to outgrown the rise, so I hesitate to add an insert....does that make sense, or am I being dumb?

Anyway, my question is: what would you ladies recommend for the next step up? Sbish? Or should I get some GMD brown edge? I really cannot justify $50 on a dipe, especially when GMDs are so cheap, so TTNN are out. I'd prefer to stay with fitteds, and $25 or less (preferably less!). TIA!

I layer on the outside of the workhorse.

Ohhh, interesting! Clearly I didn't think of that! The only inserts I have are for my two FuzziBunz, but I have orange, yellow, and red edge prefolds. Do you think a tri-folded prefold would make it too bulky?

  • I finally made the jump to sbish and it was the best decision I made for ON. My 2 yr old was soaking through everything, and sbish did the trick! And you can usually find lightly used ones on a b/s/t group for $15-$20

  • I don't think Sbish would be a bad choice.  I will say we used brown edge workhorses with a hemp insert (also on the outside) from 14 months through 22 months or so.  It's been awesome for us.  At 24 months the larges still fit fine for daytime, but we moved up to green workhorses for the extra absorbency ON at 22 months.

I think you could probably get away with a tri-folded NB or small prefold.  I wouldn't go any bigger than that though.  You'd probably get too bulky to fit under a cover.

  • You could do a lot of things.  If the workhorses still fit, you can try hemp.  You can buy a yard of hemp fleece and cut it into sheets that you can fold and insert into the covers.

You don't need to sew the edges, they might roll a little, but hey shouldn't fall apart.

You could also size up, but you are getting to the point where he will be wetting the heaviest.  I found that from 9-15 months was the worst with my daughter.

Also, if you are interested in TT and are willing to buy used, you could join their B/S/T group.  Watch for the ones that are older.  I picked up a perfectly fine fitted that was only $20.  The only issue was it wasn't fluffy anymore and had a slight stain on the soaker.  And you don't need to get a TTNN.  My son is a pretty heavy wetter at 10 months, and he still does fine with a little tush TT fitted.

  • Thanks for all the ideas, ladies.  I have no issues buying used, so I will start keeping an eye out for Sbish or a cheaper TT perhaps.  TT stands for Twinkie Tush, right?

    Yes.

I've never used a Sbish, but I've heard a lot of people recommending them.

  • I've been experimenting with various things (sbish tonight) but wanted to say don't give up on the workhorses altogether. I've found a workhorse with a hemp insert and trifolded prefold (both outside the workhorse) absorbs a ton. It's extremely bulky (I've been using a wool cover) but it does work.
