First Doctors' Appointment

Okay, just started browsing over here after 5ish months in TTGP, so, first of all, Hi!
Second of all, quick question:

It seems like almost all of you are getting blood tests, beta tests, appointments at 4 weeks, 6 weeks, etc.

My OB said she'd see me in November, when I'm at about 10 weeks.  It seemed that was pretty standard from what I'd heard before, but it definitely does not appear to be the case on here, so I'm just curious: When did your OB suggest your first appointment?  If it was before 8-10 weeks, was that because you requested an early appointment for a particular reason?

Re: First Doctors' Appointment

  • @LittleBunnyFufu - I realize that - I'm wondering though if the early appointments are at the patient's request or the doctor's recommendation.

  • No doctor should be giving earlier appointments because some whiny brat thinks she's a special snowflake.

Woahhh.  Okay?  Where did that come from?!

    image  image

  • You think they should bend to the whims of whiny patients that are asking them to run expensive tests that aren't necessary just to get them to shut up?

Umm... No?   And I'm not sure where any of this is coming from.

I noticed a whole lot of early appointments mentioned in the posts on this board.  I was curious as to who initiated those appointments, and if 8-10 weeks was still the norm for most.

  • Agree with PPs, at my clinic, if I hadn't been through the losses/fertility stuff, I would call when I got a positive test and be seen somewhere between 8-10 weeks. I think a lot of women end up on the boards for support through various issues and then they/we like it and stick around, so we're possibly statistically overrepresented.

Also, some OBs will have you come in for betas if you have things like spotting or extreme cramping so some women are seen then. Some offices do a visit before 8 weeks that's just a pee test and filling out family history as well. A lot is dependent on your OB and their procedures. But, no, mostly the best case scenario is that you only get seen at 8-10 weeks because nothing has gone wrong before then.

  • When I was pregnant with DD, my OB saw me at 10 weeks. I ended up being a high risk, so with both my following pregnancies, I was seen a few weeks earlier. (Mostly for not fun stuff like 24 hour urine collections and other baseline tests)

  • When I went to the health department to have my pregnancy confirmed they called for me and went ahead and had my first prenatal apt scheduled for yesterday and also they went ahead and scheduled my first visit with doctor for this monday. I will be 6 weeks and 2 days then. & I think the only reason that my dr is seeing me that early is because he will be gone the next week. But my last pregnancy seemed like they didn't see me until later.

  • My OB's office sends you in for blood tests pretty soon after you call to say you had a positive test but they don't actually see you until 12 weeks. My previous pregnancy actually ended in miscarriage so I expected an earlier appointment this time around. They said they would stick with 12 weeks unless something went wrong.

Of course I did get some ultrasounds earlier because we did have some concerns with this go round but still didn't see my OB til 12 weeks! Makes for an impatient mama but no need to worry about this!

  • I just called my doctor today and they also said 10 weeks. I was bummed to have to wait so long but based on previous posts I guess it's normal.
  • It's so hard to wait, especially when you have been through multiple MC's with no successful birth yet. I just found out Friday and I called my Dr. today. Even with my history of MC's (the most recent being in April) she said there was no reason to come in earlier than next week. That's probably even a bit early but they want to at least see me for an initial visit.

Even though I want to know what's going on right this second (as most do), I know it makes no sense to push for an earlier appointment.

I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • I'm a FTM and being seen at 8 weeks.  The earliest appointment they could make for me was on 10/31.  I don't think I have ever been so excited for Halloween!

  • I actually have an appointment with my doctor for an ultrasound and follow up for Wednesday, because i had my annual last week and told her i was TTC, and she said she wanted to do a scan just to make sure i didn't have cysts or fibroids that were stopping me from getting pregnant (i had to have surgery two years ago to remove a large dermoid cyst and several fibroids).  However, at my annual i was 7dpo.  This morning, at 11dpo, i got a +HPT (yay!).  I'm going to call the office tomorrow and see if they still want to see me this week, or if i should wait...my apointment that is currently out there would be at 13dpo, so just shy of 4 weeks pregnant.

i'm honestly not sure if she'll still want to scan for cysts/fibroids just to be safe, or if she'll just tell me to come back in another 4 weeks.  i don't think there's much to look at on an ultrasound at the 4 week mark, so if she wants me to wait, that's totally fine with me.

@URmysunshine77   Thank you  :)   I didnt post the BFP on the TTC board - I know how too many of those have gone down (and how I've felt seeing them on certain days), so I just opted not to, I'd also been off the boards for 3 weeks because we had a guest with us.

@ everyone else -  thank you also.   Obviously my post was misinterpreted by some as fishing for excuses for an earlier doctors appointment, but that was absolutely not the case (quite happy with my PCP/OB and trust her recommendations fully). I was genuinely curious - and as the rest of the comments have shown, it does seem to vary a LOT by region and for a whole lot of different reasons.  Very interesting to read, actually.

  • It really blows my mind how rude some people can be on these boards. We are all going to be/are parents so some people should grow up and have a little more compassion for others or just keep your mouth shut. If you cant just simply answer the question then don't comment, it's that simple.

So, to answer your question, I had my first appt this time around at 8 weeks. No special reason, I did have some complications with my first pregnancy but now have a healthy almost 2 year old, So it wasn't because of any medical reasons, just when they scheduled it.

Good luck at your first appt and I wouldn't worry about having to wait until 10 weeks, it's pretty normal. :)

  • It really depends on the doctor themselves. Mine saw me at 6 weeks on the dot and I'll have my second appointment next appointment at 2 days shy of 10 weeks.

However, I had an extra long cycle and his receptionist had to set my appointment based on my LMP {7/14}, not when I actually ovulated {8/29}. According to her, I was somewhere in the 8/9 week range when I called instead of the 4 week range that I actually was. She had no real say in the diagnoses and could only go by the dates, not via my word. The doctor was much more understanding and a quick ultrasound showed my ovulation date -14 days {so 8/15} was a better base to start the pregnancy than the LMP that the receptionist had listed.

I'm very concerned about what your definition of "rude" is.  Not a single person here was rude to the OP.  And every single poster answered her question.  Is it because we didn't end our answers with a smiley face?

If this post was somehow shocking to your delicate sensibilities, this may not be a good home for you.

  • You brought it on yourself by being rude to my first initial comment. I have NOT ONCE gone out of my way on any board to put someone elses opinions or whatever down, like you did to me. You were extremely rude in your comment back to me and it was totally uncalled for. I don't feel bad one bit.

@x0rhi - So you calling me an asshole was what, you being polite and compassionate and keeping your mouth shut?  You want to be the pot or the kettle?

  • This is my third pregnancy and my OBs have always tried to schedule for 8 weeks.  The first one ended up being 6 weeks because my cycle is long, but it wasn't intentional.  This last one is going to be more like 10 weeks because I just couldn't fit my schedule up with my dr's until then.

  • I'm going in at 8.5 weeks.
  • I'm going in at 8 weeks myself. I remember during my first pregnancy wondering why the doc didn't want to see me immediately, but they told me it is pretty standard to see the doc after 8 weeks.

  • I have PCOS and several other issues. Have been going to an RE and was on fertility drugs etc. They monitor you very early on to make sure everything is progressing as it should. If you haven't been seeing an RE (reproductive endocrynologist) the normal time to see your doctor would be at 9 or 10 weeks, so you are fine.
  • My first appt is scheduled for 6w1d, the earliest my dr will see someone:) no idea if I'll get an ultrasound, but I need to get a dr note to get the flu shot because it's required by my job. :)

  • Yikes, 1st trimester hormones.
  • Yikes, 1st trimester hormones.
    No.

    I'm Sorry, what?

  • Are you blaming the legitimate answers to the question on hormones, or are you blaming the, "You're all bunch of rude meanieheads" ridiculousness on hormones?  I think it's safe to say that this thread pattern would have gone down the same way on pretty much any other board on TB, even the ones where no one is currently pregnant.  In fact, I think there's a pretty good chance that not everyone on this THREAD is currently pregnant, let alone in first tri.

Not everything can be attributed to hormones.  Just saying.

The "you are all a bunch of rude meanieheads" is nothing that I said and would ever say so not sure why that's quoted. And it was a sarcastic joke, nothing to be taken so seriously, sorry that you took it the wrong way.
  • Apparently 8-10 weeks is pretty standard unless there's a known issue. I'll be a 7w3d for my first appt. I didn't request any special time, that's just how the office scheduled it. I think it largely depends on the patient history and the office's procedures.

  • My doc has always set an appointment for about a week after I call them for a dating ultrasound. These have been around 5-6 weeks. Best of luck!
Just wait and see what happens when someone posts an "Am I pregnate?" question. The claws go deep. Not 100% sure why it's happening here though.
