NBR - Help me apply for a job!

Soooo - currently a high school teacher and looking for a new job. For a few reasons - work in the 51st worst state for teachers, hate my boss, never going to get another raise again, etc, etc.

The job I'm looking into is an Executive Assistant for the Dean of the School of Education and a state university. Job description is basically the Dean's "right hand man" - writing/editing/sending emails on their behalf, booking appointments, resolving problems, organizing meetings, etc. They want me to submit a writing sample, but give no explanation of what this should be. I've only ever applied for one professional post college job - and that would be the one I'm in now, so I have no experience with this. What does this mean???

I know it needs to be something professional - but I don't and have never written grants, or journal articles, or anything like that. So I'm stuck on what to submit. Any ideas???? 'Preciate the help!

  • If I were you I would write about something you are passionate about. That way your positivity comes through in the writing. Do you care about a particular aspect of teaching, curriculum etc. Can you write an analysis regarding that topic on how this has changed over time, affected students, changed your teaching style etc. Sorry I don't have much of an idea.

  • They want to see that you can write competently. Do you have a well written email or something that would be applicable to the job that you can submit? Even a well written report on a student or class that you could remove privacy concerns from? My degree is in Journalism so this is a usual request for most jobs I have applied for.

Just one thing to add...I find that especially jobs at colleges are filled by people internally. Good luck and give it your all, there is likely to be stiff competition!

Thanks! this is definitely helpful. I gathered something up that shows I can write competently and submitted the application this morning. I know that a lot of jobs are filled internally at colleges, so we will see what happens. I've just been casually looking for a new job...there's really no rush, just don't want to be teaching high school forever now that it sucks here in NC.Thanks for the help!
