Sleep help!!!!

This is a post and run sorry!

I apologize if this has been discussed but I can't seem to find any previous posts about it. I need help with sleep!! I have no problem falling asleep, usually around 830-10at the latest) but in the last week or so I wake up about midnight-1am wide freakin awake and I can't get back to sleep :( I kept reading Unisom was ok to take, I heard benadryl is a no no and tylenol pm makes me cranky the next day.... the pharmacist told me not to take Unisom because it's got antihistamines.... he suggested Melatonin. So my question before running to the Dr for help is what works for you ladies? TIA!!

  • I've taken unisom (with B6) every night for 7-8 weeks for morning sickness as per my Dr. The brand Unisom actually makes two types of medication, one is a gel cap with diphenhydramine and should be avoided when PG. The other is a SleepTab and contains doxylamine succinate and is the one recommended to PG women. Even though it's used for morning sickness, it's a sleep aid so it would serve your purpose. I would just give your Dr's office a quick call before you take anything!

  • Everyone I know has been told benadryl is okay during pregnancy. But they say it is okay for allergies not to be taken as a sleep aide only. I take it for my allergies and enjoy the added benefit of sleep.
  • Have you tried lavendar scents? We have a humidifier that will put out essential oils maybe that would work for you. I have a scentsy stuffed animal that had a lavendar pack in it that I keep on the night stand. It really helped me to sleep. Pre pregnancy anyway I need a new pack though.

  • Another crappy night :( I tried the melatonin for 2 nights and it gets me to sleep but then Im up at midnight wide awake... Last night I fell asleep at like 9 in my bed and was up again at 1230 and ended up on the couch tossing and turning, sleeping for 45 minutes and up again and sleeping again and then up again. I called my Dr office this morning and the nurse took my info down and then says well dr isn't in until monday can we give you a call monday? THIS IS MY WTF FRIDAY!!! My response to her was 'well i would love to get some sleep this weekend but I guess I don't have a choice but to wait until monday..."

  • Here's another vote for Unisom sleep tabs. They've helped me with MS and insomnia. My doctor recommended it.

  • I work closely with the sleep center at my hospital and while this sounds counter intuitive they recommend getting up leaving the bedroom and doing something (read a book, knit, watch tv, fold laundry) and then the moment you feel sleepy try going back to bed.
  • Another unisom/B6 taker. Religiously every night. Benedryl is on my safe med list from the OB, although I wouldn't get in the habit of taking it as a sleep aid.

  • OP.  Why are you going to bed at 8:00/9:00 PM? Is this your normal bedtime?  If not, try to go to bed as close to your pre-pregnancy bedtime as possible. I understand you might be exhausted from your long day at work/etc but what might be happening is your body is basically going into 'nap mode' when you try to go to sleep at 8pm as it's more use to a later sleep time for your real sleep.

If you need a power-nap to get through the day/make it to your old normal bedtime, set your alarm and only allow yourself to take a 20-40 min nap  earlier in the day, then as much as you might not want to, get up, and do the rest of your evening.  (Supper, tv, etc).  Go to bed at your normal time.

If that doesn't work, and you still wake up restless in the middle of the night, get out of bed, and do something like someone else suggested along the lines of read, laundry, dishes etc.  (You should avoid computer/phone screens as they can stimulate you and keep you awake according to some researchers).

If this doesn't help, then talk to your dr about what meds are safe during pregnancy and take what he recommends.
