AS timing

I know typical AS timing is 20 weeks, and that's when I had it done with my son. My doctor this time is recommending I get the scan at 18 weeks, with a follow up scan closer to 30 weeks. We're going to discuss it at my appointment next week and I'm not sure of my opinion yet. I think part of the reason the doc suggested an early scan is to calm my nerves. But none of my son's health problems were caught at his AS. His kidney blockage wasn't caught until 30 weeks and no one had any clue he had liver problems until a couple of weeks after he was born. So a clean scan at 18 weeks isn't going to reassure me anyway. My concern is that baby might not be developed enough at 18 weeks to measure everything. So I'm curious...

Did you have an anatomy scan earlier than 20 weeks? If so, any trouble getting measurements, or were there things they missed?

The earliest I have had an A/S was at 18+2. The latest (with this pregnancy) was 19+3. The in at 18+2 was the pregnancy after we lost our first DS. His loss was discovered at our A/S. My OB purposely wanted me to have my A/S a little sooner to help with the anxiety (I don't think it really helped, but it was nice of him to think of me). They have never had any trouble with measurements.

I had our anatomy scan at 19 weeks and 2 days I believe. He was measuring about 5 days ahead though. I have since had a scan at 29 weeks and will have another next week at 36 weeks for growth due to loss history and to help with my anxiety. I believe anatomy scans at my doctor's office are typically done between 18 and 22 weeks as well.

Ok, thanks guys. It helps to hear a couple people who had an A/S before 20 weeks and didn't have trouble getting measurements.

Not sure why I'm worried about it. I know I won't be able to relax even after this baby is born, so what's the use getting nervous about something like this?

I had a scan done at 18 weeks this time and they couldn't get the measurements they wanted, so I had to go back in at 20+..
That said, the biggest problem they had with me was that I have a lot of scar tissue from my c-sections, and that blocked the view. Babies can still be pretty low at 18 weeks.
By the time we finally had it done (nearly 22 weeks) they could see him just fine.

Obviously do what you think is best for you. If waiting until 20 weeks isn't too hard, I would wait. I couldn't - I had to see..

I had mine at 18+4 and we were able to get all the pictures they needed.

I've heard after 18 was ok. Definitely talk to your dr about his/her reasoning for wanting it on that "early" end

I had mine at 16 wks 5 days with DS they seen everything and got measurements. This time at exactly 20 weeks! I ask and they said pretty much everything is there and just has to grow after 13ish weeks! I would do it at 18 weeks and have them concentrate extra time on your areas of concern! You could also talk to the u/s tech to answer questions. Good luck! Thinking if you!

I had mine at 19 weeks, I think that my office does them between 18-20 weeks.

My A/s with both DD and this LO were at 18 weeks. They had no problem getting all the measurements they needed.

I had mine at 18 weeks just due to my travel schedule. They were able to see everything that they needed to at that time.

My MFM mentioned he's going to do my scan at 18 weeks as well. Last time I had mine at 21 weeks but that's because I couldn't get in before that. I think 18 w is just fine.

Thank you everyone for calming my nerves, even about something I guess is kind of silly.

dragonfly1809 and @chikinNH you made me realize that of course they'll just do a follow up scan if they can't get all the measurements. Duh! Thank you!

And I'll have a follow up further along anyway, so hopefully all will be fine.
