What is the car seat test?

What needs to be done to "pass"? Babies are measuring 4 lb 12 oz and 5 lb 3 oz today. C section in the morning! Does this have to do with their size?? Thank u!

Re: What is the car seat test?

  • The car seat test makes sure that premature babies are able to sit in a car seat safely, without any episodes of desaturation, apnea, or bradycardia.

  • Yes to what was posted above. Typical procedure for babies that received care in the NICU.
  • My babies were born via c section at 36w4d, when my water broke. Girl 5 lbs 5 oz. Boy 5 lbs 10 oz. No NICU. Left hospital with me on day 4. She did not pass the carseat test. It was done for any babies born before 37 weeks. We had to rent a special car bed for her. We were instructed to not use any upright sitting devices for her until she was retested at 30 days. I freaked out when I was first told. Hormones didn't help. Its really done more as a precaution, doesn't mean the baby isn't ok.
  • Agree with the others. My girls were 5+ pounds at birth but were born at 35 weeks. Our hospital tests all preemies and it's a 90 minute test. I'm grateful they failed their first test because they were able to spend more time in the NICU growing and feeding. If they had passed they would have been released and probably would have been labeled as 'failure to thrive.' 2 weeks later they passed their second test and they got to come home! At our hospital they are not allowed to be released until they pass the test.
  • They tested one of my 38 weekers because he was 4lbs 8 ounces when we were getting discharged (had lost almost a pound since birth). He passed fine. Had he not, they would have admitted him to gain a bit of weight.

My twins were born at 35.2. They were in the NICU for 9 days on day 6 DS had his test and day 8 DD had hers. They each had to sit strapped into their car seat for 90 minutes without any desats or decels. (Edit for spelling and ages). Oh! And they were approx 5.5lbs each at the time of discharge.
