TTC After a Loss

AW - Unintentional diet

Okay, as some of you know, Mr. Bug was sent to his first ever check-up as an adult about 8 weeks ago.  In fact, it was his first ever check-up since getting cleared to play high school football . . .

Anyway, Mr. Bug had all sorts of blood work ran by his doctor and we found out a week or so later that he had high cholesterol.

image

A very depressing weekend ensured where Mr. Bug was convinced that he was going to die and that he was now officially "old" because the doctor put him on meds.

Mr. Bug rebounded after a couple days and decided that he was going to adjust his diet (again, afraid of imminent death). I did spend a lot of time reminding Mr. Bug that we liked to cook good food and just because we were swapping out  out protein did not mean our food was now going to be "bad".
image
And pretty much turned himself into an expert on a low-cholesterol diet and foods that should be eaten and foods that should be avoided. Being the supportive wife that I am, and because it's so much easier to eat the same thing, we both revamped out diets.

First, I made Mr. Bug start eating breakfast (something he never did).
image
I also offered to make said breakfast every morning because that was the first argument ("I don't have time").  Mr. Bug, the low-cholesterol/heart healthy diet expert now, decided on oatmeal with half a banana.  Boom. Done. We should buy stock in quaker oats.
image
We also pretty much cut red meat (beef and pork) out of our diet. We get it once a week. Maybe. We upped our fish intake from hardly ever to a couple times a week and have a lot more chicken (if you have never had ground chicken burgers, they are the bomb!).

We also bought a food scale. I never knew I could love a scale so much! We just weigh food to weigh it at this point.
image

I have to admit that Mr. Bug still mourns the lack of ribeyes in his diet but he was the one that came up with this rule.
image
We also both put back on our Up bands, and started tracking our diets on MyFitnessPal. It's amazing how much I hate to put reeses peanut butter cups in my tracker. Amazing. More importantly, Mr. Bug's follow-up blood work 5 weeks later showed that he now has low cholesterol.
image
Victory! No more meds! And, as a side benefit, because we cut out a significant portion of fat from our diets, plus we are eating more fruits and veggies, and we are exercising more, we both have lost weight!

image

Almost 20 pounds for Mr. Bug and 10 pounds for me. This puts me at (finally) pre-pregnancy weight and actually down to where I was was when Mr. Bug and I first started dating.

It's been the weirdest "diet" for me because it was all about being healthier and not about losing weight. The change in the mindset made me feel like I was not on a diet if that makes sense.

And, because I do love a treat, we discovered Klondike slim-a-bears:

I can totally plan my day so I have room for one of these bad boys after dinner.

I HATE tracking calories on MFP, but it really does hold you accountable.  I also hate putting in the Oreo cookies or M&Ms.  Congrats for both you and Mr Bug on your diet overhaul and weight loss!

  • So awesome, way to go Mr. and Mrs. Bug!! I love the idea of eating for health and not specifically to lose weight, feeling better is the goal, and if you lose a pound or two along the way it's a bonus. Love it!

  • Congratulations! And, perfect use of the Lok-meister! The kitchen scale is the best tool ever. Even when not weighing for portion control, I still find use for it. I'm converting all my old family recipes over to weight measurements. Nothing is easier that tossing your mixing bowl up on the scale, dumping in your flour and sugar, and just plopping it on the mixer. No more scoop and sweep, and cleaning up all the spilt flour. As for weight loss. I need to get back on that horse. I lost 17 lbs before the latest sFET. I've got it all back.
I love this idea! That would make baking much easier.

I sat with an extra ten pounds for a couple years now. I will say my motivation to diet was lacking. If I had tried this as a weight loss, I think I would have felt more deprived but going at it from a just get healthier perspective worked for me - it also helped that Mr. Bug was 100% on board. Dinner was my big calorie culprit and that is where must of the cutting down in calories occurred.
