Yet another baby girl name poll...sorry!

We are stuck on girl names. I know we have plenty of time, but we want to start calling her by name. I am ok with popular names, just not top 10. I already heard from baby name board that McKenize isn't a name for a girl, so can we set that aside? I would love to honor our grandmothers in some way: Addie and Emilean. Lynn is also a family name on BF's side. Last name is 4 letters with an H. We don't have to honor them, but it would be great if some of you could help me!

  • I know many girls named McKenzie, but most spelled it MacKenzie, which I find to be interesting.

    What?! They think it's a boy's name? It's 100% a girl's name in my book.

If you are set on that as a FN, I think Brooke fits best. But I love the NN Addie for Addilyn

Yeah, it was a top 100 girl name last year, but they kept telling me it means "son of Kenneth". We aren't necessarily set on McKenzie for a FN, but that has been the easiest to come up with a middle name for.

  • I love Mckenzie - I personally think the nn 'Mac' is cute. 100% a girls name.
  • My best friend's daughter's name is MacKenzie. I'm with PPs--where did the Name Board posters hear that it (or McKenzie) isn't a girl's name?? She calls her daughter "Lil Mac" sometimes. Super cute!

I voted Brooke since I've always liked the name, but it doesn't work with our last name. You could possibly go Brooke Emilynn or Brooke Addilyn.

That being said McKenzie is definitely used for girls--just please don't use it if you already have a Mc in your last name. I know a girl who is a double Mc (first AND last name) and I feel bad for her because she hated the teasing growing up. She got "Mickey" "Big Mac" "Mc Double" etc...

  • I know a little girl who is simply just Kinzie. I also like Brooklyn more than just Brooke.

  • Mackenzie is on our short list but I'm against the nn mac so I don't think we will use it. But its definately not a boys name in north america anyway. My other issue with the name is that it means 'son of' in Irish (or maybe Scottish cant remember) so I also hesitate to use something that means something in another language but is out of context here. All that being said, if I loved a name I would use it regardless. And I do think its a beautiful name! I would spell it with an A as well

  • If you go with McKenzie, I would spell it Mackenzie. I don't understand a first name starting with "Mc." It's very unattractive to me.

  • While McKenzie is not my personal style I think it's a real stretch trying to say that it's not a girls name. There are many names that have crossed the gender lines in the last few decades (Aubrey, Kelly, Sydney, Elliot, Noah, Riley, just to name a few) and I'd definitely say that Mckenzie is in that category.

I prefer Brooke, but that's just because I like more classic or antique sounding names and Mckenzie feels a little trendy to me. If you love it then I think you should go for it.

  • I've found the BNB to be a little old fashioned in their opinions. They absolutely hate trendy names. I was told that my possible boy's name if Jackson was eye-roll worthy. Whatevs. I asked for their opinion, and I got it.

That said, I love McKenzie, and would assume it to be a girl's name. Not that it matters whether it's considered girl's, boy's, or unisex name. It's a beautiful name, and I love MN Grace with it.

  • Thanks for all the comments! The BNB had me second guessing McKenzie but I am so glad to hear that y'all think it is an acceptable name for a girl. We are trying out both McKenzie and Brooke out right now to see which comes more naturally. And I will definitely keep the spelling of MacKenzie in mind. :)
