Re: EBF babies and bottles

  • We do 4.5  she always seems like she is still hungry, but if we feed her any more, it seems to all come back out!

  • Mine takes 4. I am starting to freeze in 4.5 increments, but it'll be a few weeks before we cycle through to those bags. I send one bottle of freshmilk a day for the morning and I'm considering just getting crazy with it and putting like 6 oz in that bottle and a number 2 nipple to see what happens. Wondering if she used to get a lot more when we nursed all the time and thats why she's now a worse sleeper.
  • @Lcgroenewe‌ it's interesting you mention changing the nipple size. I was talking with someone and she said something along the lines of "well your nipples never change size so you don't need to switch the bottles". She wasn't an LC or nurse or anything relevant, but it was an interesting point

  • @elsa1688 Yeah at first babe could only take the size 1 nipple, but she's taken 2's and even 3's before as she's gotten older. She pretty much just drinks faster. Also our bottles fit all the different size nipples (avent). And my let down forces her to drink WAY FASTER than the size 1 nipple, that's for sure. I'm actually not sure why we mostly use size 1's still.
  • I usually give her 5 oz every 3 hours for daycare and she always takes it all.  My MIL gave her 6.5 oz the other day and she took it all.  She is a little piglet and will eat as much as you will let her.  Never spits up either.  Maybe I should be giving her more??

  • @mmandm603‌ I have heard that before also. Last night I left a 4 oz bottle with mil and apparently he sucked it down so she gave him another 2 oz. He ate all of it but I normally only give a 4 oz bottle. I find everyone's response really interesting!

  • About five

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • When I went to DD's 4 month appointment I asked the pediatrician how many ounces I should give DD in her bottles for daycare (she hadn't started DC yet) and he said 6 oz.  I thought that seemed a little high and was planning on 4oz/bottle, so I split the difference and give her 5oz.  She will take 4oz and not cry at the end though, so I don't know what to think.

  • SS: Mine won't take a bottle. :((
  • @flojo973‌ I'm the same, 5 oz and she would eat forever if given the chance and no spit ups. She doesn't fuss after 5 and usually won't eat for 3 hours (unless I'm there, because she loves the boob). So I guess 5 is good.

Just a bit over the 4 line. 3 bottles a day (between 9am-5:45pm roughly) if she ate right before daycare and 4 bottles a day if she ate a couple hours before daycare. Lately she has been getting up at just the WRONG time (too early) and wanting to nurse immediately, then by the time she should nurse again it's time to leave for daycare, so she is hungry first thing and I have to send a freezer pack with her fresh milk. (frustrating, she is dipping into my supply as is!)

If she wakes up later like she used to before this regression/wonder week madness hit I can feed her right before she leaves and she only wants the just-over-12 ounces she get's from 3 bottles. I nurse her within a half hour typically of getting her home, since her last bottle is around 4pm so by 6pm she is eating my face.

Edited to add: My LO also just likes sucking. If you stop at 4 she may sometimes get upset, then you give her the paci and she is perfectly fine again. She sometimes falls asleep before all 4 ounces too. Maybe a lot of babies will just keep going if there is still something to suck on? Also, i've overfed my daughter more than once and didn't use to think that is possible. She will keep drinking and it will be ALL OVER me later. Eeesh!

Between 7-10.  Usually around 9.  Baby loves her milk I guess.

Edited to add: I don't buy the 'only needs X amount' business.  Adults have very different caloric needs based upon metabolism and activity, so why shouldn't babies?  I am perfectly happy letting DD have as much as she wants, even if some days that is >40 ounces.

Also, I was doing some reading on this a while back and read in a couple of places that only volume is linked to significant weight changes.  The caloric content of the BM didn't significantly affect weight.  Counterintuitive, but interesting.
I have got to tell my sister in law that. She is convinced that her BM must have been "high in fat", and that is the reason her daughter was such a bruiser despite taking only 4 ounces in a sitting...

    won't take paci either

eta - DS is 20 lbs at 4 months and we were told by the RN at dr's office that this is simply because I have milk high in fat content as another pp had said. I couldn't hazard a guess at how many oz though as he won't take bottle

Usually 4 oz for the first bottle of the day then 3 oz for her second and third bottles (she takes 3 while I am at work).

  • Also, for all those wondering about increasing bottle size, DS ate bottled BM in daycare until he turned one, when we switched to WCM.  He never took more than 5.5 oz in a bottle.  Also, the total volume he took while I was gone never changed either, he just ate larger bottles less often.  For example, when he started daycare, he took 3 - 3ish oz bottles.  After a few months, he switched to 1 - 5.5 oz bottle and 1 - 4.5 oz bottle.  So basically the same volume, but one less bottle.

3oz when she was taking a bottle...stopped taking one at six weeks. Only takes 1-1.5oz at daycare now. Praying that it gets better. Freezer is stocked with 4oz bottles....
  • LO takes 4 ounces every 2 hours. We are trying to get her to gain weight though or it would be less often. It is very hard to get her to take all the bottle each time.

  • My LO takes about 4 ounces at a time. But lately she seems more hungry.
  • She started out at 3 but it's increased to 4/4.5 oz every 2-3hrs. Pumping is getting harder to do at work. I feel like I'm pumping less everyday :( I have had to give her some formula here and there.
  • @saltylovely @nicolemcm We are trying the Medela Calma this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. If this doesn't work, we aren't spending any more money on bottles and just going to try sippy cups and hope for the best. Around 6 mo, DD was pretty proficient with a sippy so hopefully only two months more of being chained to DS.
  • H gets maybe a bottle every week as the pedi said to do that so LO gets used to it and doesn't regress. In said bottle I pump from one boob in the morning to get the 4.5 ish ounces and he's been eating most of it. Though if I am home when he's taking the bottle from DH and I am doing dishes or something he does want on the boob as soon as I am able- but I think it's more of a comfort thing. MIL gave him a 4.5 ounce bottle and another 2.5 ounce bottle last weekend in about an hour time span though, so who knows.

I tried these for my daughter and she choked on them. Even though they don't spill, they gush out... But she was much less proficient when we used these and she really didn't like them. Talk about a waste of money! I bought two and never used them more than 3 weeks...
  • @flojo973‌ sounds just like my LO. We just upped him to 5oz bottle at daycare like 2/3 weeks ago, and already I'm considering upping it to 6 (mostly because he loves to eat/ has been napping like crap and maybe a full belly will help with that). Seeing the ped next week so I'll ask then.
