Abnormal NT Ultrasound

My husband and I had our 12 week NT Ultrasound yesterday and it came out abnormal so we are going for extra genetic testing. I am trying really hard not to freak out. The numbers were just outside of the normal range and the baby was moving and jumping around a bunch in there. Also we saw the nose bone and the ultrasound lady said that the movement and the nose bone makes it very unlikely that the baby has down syndrome. She said that we are in the 1 in 100 chance range. Anyone else had an abnormal NT? Any advice? Thoughts? Strategies for staying calm until I can get the additional testing done?

Re: Abnormal NT Ultrasound

  • Thank you! That's what we keep telling ourselves, all signs were good except the slightly high number. They also said it was tough getting a good measurement since the baby wouldn't stop moving. Keeping our fingers crossed everything is great!

  • I went for my 12 week u/s today and although the tech didn't say anything as I'm sure they aren't supposed to, I did enough research before hand to see that the NT is a lot wider than what is considered normal. I have an ultrasound pic and there is a ruler along the side so I'm estimating the NT at 5mm which is not a great stat. I'm no tech but I am worried already and have to wait until my blood work comes in and until I hear from my doc with the results. I've been reading up on abnormal NT however and there are lots of positive outcomes out there which should keep us hopeful. Anyone who has has abnormal NT results and have found out anything further, your thoughts and advice would he greatly appreciated.
  • The NT fold was only 2.8 for me but my blood test results came back as 1 in 12 chance of down syndrome. I freaked out as I thought at 20 I would be in the 1 in 1640 range. I did a blood test for some more answers before I decide if I'm going to do amino. I'm still a little scared as this is a first pregnancy and I don't even know what is going on =/ Thoughts and prayers to you.

Maybe we should have a abormal NT scan check up next week to see how everyone is doing and what the blood tests came back as.

  • This happened to us with our first son and the genetic testing all came back normal. I have heard from many other moms that this has also happened to them. It is definitely anxiety provoking waiting for the test, but knowing that there are many false positives with the NT measurement may help a little. I will be thinking of you and your baby.
  • Please try not to worry. Most babies who have abnormal measurements at their NT scan turn out to be absolutely fine. And remember that a 1 in 100 chance is still a very small chance.

  • Do you know your measurement? Ours was high at 3.4. However, I also had the verifi test which ruled out ma he different chromosome abnormalities. It is stressful to hear results outside of the normal range, but there is a good chance everything is ok.

  • I'm in your same boat. I went to the doctor Monday and they found thicker fluid on babys neck and now waiting on blood results. They didn't even tell me the mm of the fluid nor did they even tell me what blood test they did or the name of it. She said they are testing for Trisomy 21,18, 13 and Turner syndrome. My husband and I are so scared. I left a message with the nurse this morning asking the mm and the name of the blood test.
  • I'm sorry you have to worry - I hope the additional tests show a healthy baby.

They gave you the odds w/o the blood work back?   Did you talk to the genetic counselor or just eth u/s tech about it?

  • I have no advice but sending thought and prayers your way. Staying calm is always hard, I've been having a hard one relaxing this past week. I pray when I'm driving and that works, just talking about what I'm concerned about always helps. Or I find even venting on here seems to do the trick. I recommend eating ice cream.
  • Got a confirmation call from my doctor this afternoon..the nuchal translucency was measuring at 5.5 mm which is on the very high end of abnormal. I can't say I'm surprised as I predicted this and was just waiting for the call. Though I won't be going for my second round of blood work until November, which will be the last step in my prescreening, my doctor has already referred me to a genetic counsellor and I should have an appt by next week. I guess because the number is so high. I left work immediately and went through about every possible emotion in the last few hours! I was hysterical, then angry, and now just neutral. I just don't get it as the baby was so active kicking around and moving in there :( I wish everyone who is going through the same thing to find the answers they are looking for, and to find some moments of peace and happiness in this difficult and confusing time. Keep me posted and I will do the same.

  • Sending you hugs. I know it's hard to stay positive but we are thinking about you.

I had some abnormal readings with my sons nt scan. With my blood work part. He is perfect and healthy, just was pre term.
  • I am so sorry to hear this. Thoughts and prayers to you. Try to stay positive. Hugs!!

  • I'm sorry the numbers are that high.

You can get the verify/maternity21 test done now to confirm to something like 99% accuracy. You don't have to wait until November.

I'm hoping for the best for a healthy baby for you.

  • Thanks. I'm in Canada so our pre screening testing is a bit different I believe. I haven't heard of that sort of testing but maybe the genetic counsellor will enlighten me!
  • I went in to do the genetic counseling yesterday and had my blood drawn. They say it will take 2 weeks to get results back! I miss hoping they come sooner rather than later. I am going to go crazy waiting!
  • I went in two weeks ago for my scan and blood work. Then I got a call saying that the pathology lab made errors with the blood test and now I have to be re-tested because they mucked up.

I'm 15 weeks now and had to have an "Igene" blood test done this morning because I'm too far along for another nuchal scan test. The Igene gets sent to America to be tested and I won't get the results for 3 weeks. I'm with all you girls who are stressing, and I hope everyone gets their closure soon - it's no good being worried!
