I wanted to post this yesterday, but busy. A few days ago
@Avswolf posted about how the school sent an article about sex to read with her teen. It was talking about emotional issues caused by having sex too early, as well as STDs, and abstinence. I'm wondering how F14 feels about school getting involved with this issue? How do you feel about teens having sex, and do you think there's an appropriate age? It's a long way off, but how do you plan to discuss this with your kids?
Re: Hot Topic: Teens & Sex
I think schools should absolutely be involved in sex education. The hospital system I work for has school based health centers and programs dedicated to providing accurate, balanced, sex education. Parents in our community see this as a valuable supplement to their discussions with their children at home.
The education provided is age appropriate and helps students to reduce their risk of unwanted pregnancies and STIs in additional to teaching how to delay the onset of intimate relationships, enhance their relationships, and develop decision making and negotiating skills.
Our school based health programs also provide all types of contraception including insertion of IUDs. These can obtained with or without parental consent.

Teens and - believe it or not - preteens are going to have sex regardless of what adults think is appropriate. It's irresponsible to not give them the tools they need to do it in the safest way possible.

I don't think I will ever sit down with my kids and have "the talk." I never did with my parents. Conversations around sex happened naturally because my parents were very open and non judgemental when it came to the topic. Obviously not every child has that luxury and that is why it is so important to have external resources besides ones parents or caregivers when it comes to sex.
