Thyroid Issues and Preg

Hi all,
When I was 16, I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (a form of HYPERthyroidism) and was subsequently treated with radioactive iodine (which essentially dissolved my thyroid completely) and now I take Synthroid as my only thyroid function. It's been really manageable for the past 10 years, however I'm a little nervous about how my pregnancy may affect this. I have my first appointment with my regular doctor to check my levels next week (before I even have my first prenatal appt).

Anyone else have to take synthroid out there for either underactive thyroid/removed thyroid? How has pregnancy affected your TSH levels in the past?

Re: Thyroid Issues and Preg

  • Hi @a5swanson‌! I have hypothyroid and take synthroid. Since I was diagnosed my dosage of the med has not changed (2 years and one pregnancy). My levels were drawn a few times throughout the pregnancy and levels were normal. Hopefully it shouldn't be a problem for you as well!

  • I also take synthroid for hypothyroidism and my first pregnancy was not really affected by it.
  • I take synthroid for hypothyroidism (originally Graves treated with radioactive iodine as well). When I was pregnant with DD I had my blood monitored every 2 weeks in the first trimester and my synthroid had to be increased 3 times.  After that it stayed consistent. After I gave birth they had to put me back down to my original dose. I got my thyroid checked a few days after my BFP last week and my TSH was already off.  I'm taking 2 pills on Tuesday and Friday now. They are going to check me again in another week. I'm still under the care of my RE, though. So they are taking blood about twice a week anyway. Bottom line is, your meds may need to be adjusted as quickly as now, so I'm glad you're going in next week.

  • I take synthroid for hypothyroidism, and my TSH levels increased almost immediately after I got pregnant.  My doctor did change around my dose, and we are going to check my levels again in 3 weeks.

Good to meet a fellow Graves patient! I've never known anyone else that has it/had it.

I wonder if my reg doctor will make me go back to my endo. I haven't been to him since about a year after my radioactive iodine. Anxious to hear what my dr has to say. I am feeling exhausted, but that could also be from the pregnancy. I already take 200mcg/day. How much are you taking now? @Oldbuthopeful2014‌

  • I've taken synthroid for 15 years. Pregnancy can affect your levels so they will initially draw your levels then continue to monitor throughout your pregnancy. My initial level was ok last time. I'm positive they will monitor you closely with having graves disease. No worries!

@a5swanson‌ I'm on 100 mcg. Once I graduate from my fertility doc to my obstetrician at 8 weeks, I'm going to start seeing my endocrinologist regularly for monitoring. Nice to meet you too! I've only met a couple other Graves patients in the 5 years since I was diagnosed and treated.

  • I've taken Levothyroxine for Hypothyroidism for the past 17 years. I'm currently on 100mcg. My OB's office disregarded me when I asked to have my levels tested when I found out I was pregnant, so my GP wrote an rx for them. I don't see my OB until the end of the month, so I wanted these labs done now to prevent MC. I also want you ladies to have your progesterone tested asap! My SIL is hypothyroidic and had a stillborn her first pregnancy. She took progesterone for the subsequent pregnancies because of her low levels and everything was fine. There is a link between thyroid disease and low progesterone. Some docs don't believe this, but there is no harm in the supplement. My level was at 17. My GP thought it was normal so I called my OB this morning and they prescribed progesterone until 13 weeks (they like to see it above 18). I'm sending my thyroid labs to her as well, maybe she'll see something my GP didn't. Good luck everyone!
