1st Trimester

Would YOU go?

Just curious what you ladies think/would do...

I am currently about 9 weeks pregnant and have been nauseated 24/7 and exhausted all the time. I have a mission trip planned in week 11 to Nicaragua to stay at an orphanage for a week and spend time with the kids. I have been before - the living conditions are OK (bunk beds, sheets, pillows, working toilets, cold showers) but the food is prepared few and far between and we prob only get 1000-1200 calories a day. Plus we are out in the rain forest with no doctors nearby.

Re: Would YOU go?

  • NO I would not. Being you have been, you're not missing out on an experience. Go next year

  • I wouldn't go....perhaps I'm overly cautious, but the chance of catching something/having no medical care is not a good combination when it comes to pregnancy.

  • No one could convince me to do that while pregnant, no way.
  • Probably not. Unless you can bring extra food then maybe consider it but it sounds like the trip will totally suck for you.
  • Not a chance.  Too much risk for my liking.
  • I wouldn't go but then again I'm a worry wart and would always worry about the What Ifs

  • I love trips like that, but no, I would cancel. I'd be too worried about the water, the bugs, the food (pasturization, food safety, etc). Plus not feeling well will be much worse there. Could you talk to the trip leader about it? Explain all your concerns and see what they think?

  • I'd skip it. Stay home. Bump.
  • no, I would not.  My m/s lasted well into the 2nd tri as did the being tired.  It would've been too stressful on my body.  Stay home and take care of yourself and your little one.

  • I would hold off. As much as that is something great to do, it is still so early on in your pregnancy, we went to the Bahamas for a few days and I was miserable being away from my home's comfort. It will be even harder if you are there to help and are not %100 yourself.
  • I hate to say it, but I wouldn't go. Sorry.
  • I would definitely not go.

  • Wow, what a cool thing to do!  It sounds like it might be too much for you this year if you're not feeling very well, but I would talk to your ob/midwife and see what they say before making a final decision.

  • No, I wouldn't go but if you really want to then consult with your doctor and see what he/she suggests.

  • It sounds totally awesome, but I probably wouldn't go.  I would err on the side of caution.  If it's possible maybe you could sponser someone else and then you're still doing your part and helping, but with out putting any strain or health problems in the path of you and your baby!

  • No, I would not go.

  • I wouldn't go. If you already have money invested in it, maybe they will let someone else go in your place.

  • I would not go.  If something were to happen you would want a doctor near by and your doctor would want you near.  Ask your doctor for his/her opinion.

  • No, I would not go and I am pretty sure my OB would not want me to go.

  • Although its a noble cause, I would turn it down.  There are too many elements to that scenario that don't sound ultimately healthy for a pregnant woman.  I won't even go to my friends destination wedding at a resort in Mexico during pregnancy...something about leaving the country right now just isn't appealing to me...

  • You would not be able to pay me to make that trip!
  • No, I wouldn't go, but I like the idea of sponsoring someone else so that you're still making a difference.  GL!!

  • No.  Can you sponsor someone else to go - maybe a way to help without going yourself??

Edit: Should have read all PP, sorry.  But still think it's a good idea!

  • No.  It sounds miserable and somewhat risky.

  • Oooohh...I so would not go.  I would not want to take a chance that I would be sick, get sick (kids have germs!), or not have enough food, plus no easy access to medical attention would be a deal breaker for me.
  • No. My biggest fear would be getting sick while there. I took a similar trip to Guatemala and although our food was safely prepared for us and all we drank and used was bottled water (drinking and brushing teeth) some people still got sick. One girl was so ill that she needed and IV. It was really random as to who got sick and who didn't. With pregnancy I would not risk it. Even with being very careful  and taking all precautions it still happens.

  • My husband is actually from there and we went last October and he is having to go back to bring his elderly Grandmother back there later this month. He wanted me to go and I said NO WAY...and that is staying at hotels in the city and stuff. Sounds like you would be remote and not have access to more food and necessities so I would say it's probably not a good idea to go so early on, especially if you are not feeling well as it is. Maybe you can go the next time or help out in some other way, like preparing/collecting things to take to the children there?
  • IMHO no.

  • No way, not a chance. You have to put your baby first right now.

  • i'm sure you have your answer now, especially with the overwhelming response which i do have to agree with...
  • No way... too risky
  • What a wonderful thing to do.  I can see how you would be torn.  To answer your question -- no, I would not go.
