Need Opinions on Newborn Stash

Hi, I am about to place an order for the bulk of my newborn stash. I already have 7 covers and so my question is in regards to prefolds and workhorses. I had a growth scan yesterday and my Dr. estimates the baby will be 8ish pounds at 40 weeks (give or take a pound). I noticed that GMD newborn sizes are good until 10lbs and I'm wondering if it is worth it to order 36 changes in a newborn size or if I should just go with the smalls? Some combo of the two? I have no idea if the Dr. estimate will be correct but I am just wondering what you ladies would do. Thanks in advance!

  • Following! I've been wondering the same thing too!

  • It really depends on how much your baby pees. I moved up to smalls way before my son outgrew the size of my newborn prefolds.  But I was still glad I got them, because he had tiny hips and I had to use xsmall covers.

And also your cover size.  If you have tiny covers it can be impossible to fold a small prefold in them.

If you go with smalls you can always fold them down, but they maybe bulky the first few weeks.

Also, growth scans can be off.

  • They estimated my son to be over 9lbs and he was only 7.

  • Yeah, growth scans can be very off. But to answer your question....

My son was 7.5lbs at birth (41 weeks), 7 when we left the hospital. My dr had estimated he'd be "well over 8 lbs."

We started using our cloth at about 8 days old, so definitely back to at least 7.5lbs. We used the NB workhorses (with no snaps) for about 8 weeks and the NB prefolds for about 6 weeks. Towards the end, we could have used small prefolds but they would have been super bulky at the beginning.

I would get probably mostly NB sized, and get workhorses without snaps as they will last longer. Then get some smalls that you can fold down to fit at first.

  • And newborn diapers make excellent boosters for pockets, burp clothes, and rags.

  • I'd get 36 of the newborn size.

  • If you're going to get a bulk order, I'd include some small workhorses in the mix. My 8.14 newborn fit in the newborn workhorses for 4-5 weeks and then outgrew the rise. But even at almost 9 lbs arty birth, the smalls would have been super bulky on her.

So get a mix, and make sure you have a couple different brands of covers to ensure a good fit.
