April 2015 Moms

is this normal? :/

I've had the same headache for going on 5 days now.
I'm 13 weeks along and I'm a little nervous about taking acetometaphine every day. (I only take one every day, max.. The prescribed is two every 4-6 hour)
When I'm sitting, it's not as bad. However.. The minute I stand up, my head is pounding on the sides and under my skull. Like my brain is going to explode.
If it's not better by tomorrow, I'll call my doctor. But it this normal? It's making me miserable.

Re: is this normal? :/

  • I had terrible headaches with my LO. And they were constant. I'm sorry you are going through this! Lots of water/rest and a Tylenol when it gets too tough to handle

  • My friend, who is expecting an April baby too, has experienced headaches the entire time. It's been her primary symptom. Every pregnancy is different. Ask your doctor about your situation. I also read in one of my books that a common symptom for week 13 is headaches. This is the first week that I have been suffering as well
  • My head feels like it's been in a vice for te last week. I'm chalking it up to weather changes, pregnancy, and having a head cold. Tylenol is not cutting it, although I'm taking several a day. Just hoping it goes away soon. Good luck to you!?
  • I'm 11w and 3 days I have had a headache for the past 3 days! When I move my head it hurts... I'm scared to take Tylenol as well even tho my doc said that's all I can take. I took 1 a day for 2 days and it did help.....

I think it's because of a hormonal change because I do drink a good amount of water all through out the day.
  • That sounds like a sinus headache and Tylenol won't cut it. Yes, it's normal. But not much you can do. If it continues or you are worried, call your doctor.
  • I would get your blood pressure checked just to rule that out as an issue.

It is probably sinus (rhinitis of pregnancy can cause you to be all blocked up), weather, stress, or dehydration related.

Definitely talk to your doctor about it at your next appointment, or sooner if it gets a lot worse before then. It is probably nothing, but better safe to get checked out than let a problem go on longer than it needs to.

  • Headaches are miserable, I feel your pain. I've been seeing a chiropractor and that has seemed to help a ton! Mine are mostly allergy related, but even taking a little bit of the edge off is a huge relief. Hope you feel better!
  • I had horrible headaches and my dr told me to take magnesium it helped a lot! But if I were you I would call the dr. And I hope you feel 100% soon!!

My understanding is that headaches are caused by our elevated hormone levels (like everything else!) Other causes include dehydration, increased stress, abruptly ending your caffeine intake, or a change in your sleep habits. Occasionally, pregnancy causes the shape of the lens in your eye to change, resulting in strained vision. This can give you a headache too. Headaches are rarely a sign of something serious.

    Tips-
Sleep more, exercise, stay well hydrated, ask your partner for a shoulder/neck/head massage (or pay for one). Medication options:regular strength acetaminophen (Tylenol) or a caffeinated beverage- coffee or cola (no it won't hurt the baby), consider getting your vision checked, rest in a cool, quiet room.

    Red Flags:
-The worst headache you have ever had
-Headache that wakes you up from sleep
-Headache that doesn't go away with hydration and pain meds
-Headache that lasts more than a few hours or returns frequently
    -Abdominal pain with a headache
    -Vision changes with a headache
    -Fever with a headache

Most pregnancy headaches resolve with drinking fluids, rest, Tylonol and caffeine. If yours does not, or this is the worst headache you've ever had in your life, call your doctor. OP, are you having any other symptoms?
