Child is refusing vegi's

So we are done with purees and are on all table food. DS was doing great up until about a week ago...he would eat just about anything we put on his tray.  Now anything that is remotely healthy for him-mostly fruits and vegi'- he'll put in his mouth and spit right back out.  How are you getting your little ones to eat their fruits and vegi's?!  Are you seasoning the vegi's?  Let me in on your secrets :)

Re: Child is refusing vegi's

  • I sometimes will put some salt or butter on them. I notice that watching siblings eat them help. If that is not an option for you, how about something to dip them in. Keep serving them. All kids go through this phase.

  • I season them as I would for myself, although with as little sodium as I can. I will agree with AlwaysForgetful that he tends to eat a LOT more if I am eating it, too. I usually just fix a big plate for both of us and feed him from it. There are still some things he just flat doesn't like, broccoli is one. It must be a texture issue, because he will eat broccoli puree just fine, but actual pieces of broccoli he wants no part of. I don't try to force the issue, just keep trying every couple of weeks.

  • I'd just keep offering and trying different forms.

My LO just started spitting out food for fun. I guess she figured out she is able to. She was randomly spitting out yogurt then pushing it back in her mouth. Repeat each meal the whole week.

  • I am in the same boat! My girls were fantastic eaters - they ate EVERYTHING.  Suddenly, in the course of about 3 days, all they want to eat is bread, cheese,  meatballs, and any type of cracker. They will put a veggie in their mouth and just spit it back out.  Haley picks up each carrot and throws it off her tray. Lizzy is more sneaky and tries to hide it down by her bum in the seat. They used to LOVE carrots and squash and peas and even spinach.

I'm hoping its a phase.  I keep offering it to them hoping they'll just pick it up again. I thought I had awhile before the picky food phase started.

  • Anytime I give veggies it's usually seasoned as we eat them. I tried to give her veggies with no seasoning once and she looked at me like are you kidding me???

This is DS exactly!!  He throws carrots on the floor, but green veggies he hides in the highchair.  He loves mashed potatoes, so I hided hiding carrots in the mashed potatoes...  he laughed at me as he spit out the carrots.

  • Tonight for dinner we tried carrots, Mac n cheese, and squash spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and I even put a little brown sugar in it to try to get them to eat it. It tasted like pumpkin pie filling I can't believe they didn't want it! So good. Anyway, all they would eat was bread so finally I spread some mashed squash onto the bread and they are a little that way. I may start doing this with other veggies - try to mix them into a peanut butter sandwich or purée it and spread it on bread.

  • These kids are crazy! I keep offering it to DS as well but no luck yet. I have gotten him to eat fruits again but still struggling with vegis.

  • My LO is doing this too. I find myself still mashing his food just so he actually eats something. He is also in the let's spit out all my food stage.
