Tummy Sleeping LOs come in :)

Our LO just turned 4 months last Friday. He has been sleeping on his belly for the last month or so.
It's the only way he will actually sleep and if I start him on his back, he flips to his belly. He also had a flat back of his head because for the first 6-8 weeks he slept in the rock and play sleeper. So not only does he like sleeping on his belly but his head is MUCH better now! It was bad enough to wear doc ordered X-rays and was going to send us to a specialist if it didn't get better by the four month appointment.
Can you tell I'm trying to reassure myself that it's ok? I feel guilty and am so incredibly paranoid all night and all day while he's at daycare, but he will not sleep any other way!!!

  • If he is doing it himself it's perfectly fine.  No one can expect you to stash up all night constantly flipping him back over.

  • Thanks! I started out for the first couple weeks starting him on his back, but then he would just roll over. So for the last couple weeks I've just been laying him down on his belly.
I think part of my fear is that I've been reading a blog of a local woman who lost her son from SIDS at daycare. It's ridiculous that I keep reading it if it makes me paranoid, but it's like googling symptoms of your sick child...you know you shouldn't do it, but it's hard not to.

Exact same situation! We probably will need the helmet since she slept with her head to the right until she could roll. She only sleeps on her belly for the past month. We put her on her back and automatically she rolls to belly. There's nothing we can do. We tried the first night to flip her each time she rolled to her belly. It's impossible. We all need to sleep! Once they can do it themselves, most doctors say it's fine.

I wouldn't put him on his belly. As I have it understood, they should always start on their backs, & flip on their own.
Yep they have to roll themselves. That's why it's back to sleep. DS has slept on his stomach for about 2 months now too. I don't worry anymore because there's nothing you can do to prevent SIDS. As long as your starting them on their back and they have good head control if they can't breathe they will move their head his dr said. And yes we all need sleep!
  • Our DD is just now getting comfy enough to sleep on her belly.  She would roll over but get upset because she wasn't okay sleeping on her tummy.  My only problem is she like to face plant herself and makes me paranoid she can't breath.  So I don't get as much sleep even though she is sleeping about 5-7 hours straight since I end up checking on her to make sure she's breathing all night.

  • Like PPs said, if LO rolls on his own no worries. Everything I've read and heard says if they can roll to their tummy on their own they can lift their head up enough to be safe. But we also start DS on his back and let him roll over if he chooses. We also have a three year old who was and is a very sleeper and DS is most nights too.

  • DD rolls onto her stomach almost every night. The first couple nights I would roll her back over if I noticed, but I have since given up that fight. I only check on her now if I hear a lot of movement.
Like pp said, as long as he can lift up his head, he should be fine. I'm sure if he is having trouble, he'll let you know.

  • The first 5 days or so I was checking on her end every few minutes. But her neck support is very strong. I go in ever few hours to check on her now and she will move her head back and forth. I just take blankets out because she is mobile. It's impossible for me to keep her on her back at this unless I put her in her rnp

    It's a BOY

  • Both of mine slept on their bellies starting around 1 month and on. Once I noticed during tummy time that they could move their head well I'd start belly sleeping because they sleep much better that way. I'd always just makes sure there was nothing near them they could suffocate on... Just a flat surface.
  • DS just started turning over in his sleep. The hubs gets nervous and constantly checks on him but I keep telling him he's fine. I did take the blanket out because it winds up underneath him. I don't know if it makes him a better sleeper yet since he's whining in his sleep throughout the night - we'll see.

So, DS has apparently become a tummy or side sleeper since we transitioned out of the swaddle. Tonight he rolled to a half side/half belly position with his face smooshed into the mattress.

Fantastic.. He finally stays asleep in his crib without me intervening and I'm going to have to mess with him (and of course that will probably wake him up!) if he doesn't change position by the time I want to go to bed... I can make out his breathing on out video monitor so I figure I will let him stay like that while I can watch and hopefully either get him deep asleep before I move him or have him move his head on his own. Cross your fingers!

DS sleeps face down every night and as we speak. I leave him. If they can't breathe they will move their head.
  • DS2 has never slept on his back. Maybe one night only.
