folded placenta

I had to go in to the ER tonight due to lots of pain and cramping and pains shooting into my back.  When I was there they did an ultrasound and found that my placenta is folded over....I hadn't heard of this before and can't really find to much information on it.  They could see the heartbeat and movement but neither the Doppler or the ultrasound could pick up a readable heartbeat.  They said it was due to the fold in my placenta and that they were basically trying to hear and see through three layers of placenta.  Anyone have any insight on this?  I have a follow up ultrasound Tuesday morning.

    I've never heard that term either, how odd. Could they have meant an anterior placenta? An anterior placenta could make it more difficult to get a read on a heartbeat since it is in front of your uterus.

    No not anterior.  She said folded.  I had an anterior with my prior pregnancy.  The only thing I ca find on the internet talks a little about folds in the placenta but that is it.  It wasn't my regular OB.  I will just have to follow up with my own doctor on Tuesday.  At least I had the reassurance of seeing baby being okay and active.

    I've never heard of this before but I hope everything works out ok. Glad you were able to see the baby moving!

    I had my follow up ultrasound yesterday and they said they did see a fold in my placenta where it was basically scarring or adhering to itself.  They said it can be a marker for birth abnormalities but the baby itself seemed active and healthy yesterday with a strong heartbeat so now it's just another waiting game to get out test results back.  Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers.

    I've never heard of a folded placenta but here's hoping that it doesn't mean anything bad. T&Ps!
