getting induced, any advice?

I'm 37 weeks and I'm getting induced in two weeks. This is my second pregnancy, first one I went into labor naturally, was in labor 18 hrs and got the epidural. I keep hearing stories about how much more painful contractions are when being induced. Anyone that would like to share their advice/experience?

Re: getting induced, any advice?

  • I hear the contractions are stronger but I can't compare because this is only my second pregnancy :)

Being hooked up and stuck in the bed was the hardest part for me but that's because I was trying to tough it out without pain meds.

Just listen to your body and if it becomes too much scream for that epidural!

  • Have you asked about how they'll induce? Foley bulb or cervadil...pitocin...will they break your water? Does the hospital have wireless monitoring? Will they allow you to labor in the tub/shower with your IV?

Inductions can be very very different. I'd get some info so you know what to expect. Good luck!

Very good point. My experience was w pitocin if that helps
  • Just thought I would add, though, since I've done both an induction with epidural and a spontaneous, unmedicated birth:

the contractions I experienced during my induction were not as intense as transition contractions. They were about as intense as my contractions were before transition but after my water broke (I was on a high dose of pitocin from the start, though). However - on pitocin, I did not get much of a break between contractions, and I was confined to bed for continuous wired monitoring. The most uncomfortable position to contract in IMO is sitting down/reclining! So if you're able to get up and move and change positions, your experience might be much more manageable. Ask about wireless monitoring!!

  • Thanks ladies! This is all great advice :)
  • I would make sure you have a high enough bishop score (just google this for more info). This score predicts success of the induction (I'm assuming this is elective). You my want to hang tight if your cervix is not favorable. Good luck!

  • i was induced with my first two by way of pitocin. the contracts were relentless, with only seconds between them and i was not able to manage the pain without an epidural both times. hoping a natural, unmedicated birth this time! currently sitting at 40+4 though :|
  • I was induced at 39 weeks, 2 days with Pitocin...started at 3 cm dilated, 80% effaced, but I was induced because of high blood pressure and some protein.  Because I was already pretty ready, things didn't take too long.  I got to the hospital around 11:15 AM, had Pitocin administered at 1:15 PM, started feeling contractions around 2:00 PM.  I couldn't stand the active labor because it was all back labor so I got an epidural around 3:00 PM and then things were easy peasy until transitional labor began around 7:00 PM and baby was born at 9:07 PM.

I guess my point is that depending on how ready your body is, the process could be really short.  I didn't have any issues with being induced though.  Good luck!
  • I had a good induction experience. I had potocin and foley bulb. I got the epidural and it was blissful up to the point I got the shakes right before it was time to push.
  • It is an elective induction. The dr brought it up it up actually. I'm already 2 cm dilated and he mentioned that he doesnt think I would even make it that far.
  • I forgot to add, I'm getting induced on the 22nd and he doesn't think I'll make it that far.
