Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Cradle Cap??

My son has cradle cap and has had it for a long time. My pediatrician said to wash his hair with selsun blue and put baby oil on after but nothing is working - anyone have this issue - any recommendations??? My poor baby's scalp looks horrible!

Re: Cradle Cap??

  • my son had it too. I massaged olive oil on his scalp and left it on for about 15 minutes, then i rinsed it out as best i could and then shampooed it and gently combed through it while the soap was in his hair. It didn't make it go completely away but it did make it look a lot better.

  • DD's finally went away shortly after 6m of age.

At her 6m appt I asked about using Selsun Blue (or another similar shampoo) and she said to give it a bit more time.

I just kept up the same routine: a little coconut oil rubbed on scalp before bed, more oil about 30 minutes before bath, gently brush scalp before bath, shampoo with Mustela cradle cap shampoo every 3 days or so.

Many people also swear by tea tree oil.

Thanks! I've been using baby oil but I think I'm going to switch it out.

  • OK my kids are way older but I saw this when I logged in. Use organic coconut oil

  • It really helped my LO when we also soaked her scalp in water once the oil was applied

We would usually put the oil on a few hours before bath so it can absorb, put a bit more on shortly before the bath and then put a wet washcloth on her head for 5-10 minutes or gently pour water over her hair over and over during the bath.  That would help loosen up the pieces so they could be combed/brushed out.
  • Coconut oil!!! Rub it on 20 min before a bath.. then we combed most of it out before the bath (the oil softened it up enough to scrape it off). We did it 2 days in a row and it was gone!  and the skin on her head become super soft :)

  • Mustela has a special crime for cradle cap. My second baby had cradle cap really bad and nothing would work until I tried the Mustela creme. Olive oil worked with my first baby so that's fine for mild cases. My fourth baby started getting a touch of cradle cap so I applied the Mustela creme and it was gone in literally one day.

  • So we tried olive oil (since we had it). Left it in overnight - I did wipe some of it off before bed, when I checked him in the morning it looked way better! I wash his head and send him to daycare with a little bit in and it still looked good. I'm going continue using it for a couple more days finger crossed it goes away completely! Thanks for all the advice ladies!!

  • Hopefully that combo clears it completely.

Honestly, I've found with cradle cap, what works for one may not for the other. You just have to play around to figure out what will work. With my daughter, it was a matter of waiting it out while using coconut oil.

It doesn't bother or hurt them, it's more annoying for us to look at.

We used one of those scalp scrub brushes in the bath with shampoo and if made it worse. My LO doesn't have much hair...does anyone else use those brushes? Might try with the oil next time.

  • We are trying to work this out too. We have been using baby oil gel and a small comb. It is helping so much. I would recommend treating it in the bath because the warm water helps also.
  • I swear by the foaming Mustela Cradle Cap shampoo.  A bottle was $11.00 it has natural ingredients and it worked in DAYS...not weeks but DAYS.  My son has a TON of hair the foam was easy to use and didn't run into his eyes or make him slippery to handle.  I felt like the foam stayed in place and did the work.  The bottle lasts for a really long time.. i bought it when he was 1 month and we still have a nearly full bottle.
  • I also swear by the Mustela Cradle Cap shampoo. My second had the worst cradle cap. You could see his scalp oozing it was so bad. I tried everything and finally found success when he was about 6 months with Mustela. It was cleared up within a week or at least drastically improved.

  • Another vote for the Mustela shampoo. I discovered it when DS was an infant, and then have used it exclusively for DD since birth.

  • Mustela Foam shampoo is a miracle. Both dd's got cradle cap and the youngest has it in her eyebrows yuck. Mustela knocks it out in a few days.
