hey girls i just wanted to know if anyone of u hav used pacifiers for your kids and are they good or bad? i didn't use it with my first baby but this time i want to give it some consideration....... and also are there any specific brands that u can recommend?

We used the hospital soothie for a while. We EBF and it wasn't an issue. I bought several different kind but NUK was the favorite and I can't even attempt to give her any other brand. She uses them when falling asleep but spits it out after a little. She's 9mo btw.

I love the gumdrop pacifiers. DS gave up the pacifier at 3months though.

I tried and neither one of my kids ever took them. DD was a happy baby so it was no big deal, and she sucked her thumb for a few months when she was about 3-6 months old, which helped her put herself to sleep. DS was a colicky baby so I really wished he'd take a paci but he did not. (He never really took a bottle either.) I only tried the brands I was given at my shower, Soothie and Avent I think. I don't think they are a big deal, especially if they help keep your baby calm. It can be a little difficult to wean off of them, but most of my friends had no issue with it once they decided to take it away.

I used suckies with both my other children, just took them away around 18 months! With my first she only like nuk suckies and with my second I could only get her to take mam soothers which are the kind I am going to be first trying with this new babe!

My oldest only used nuk. My youngest used mam until she found her thumb then it was over!

We used the soothie from the hospital and then wubanubbs at home (same nipple as hospital). DS used it pretty regularly for the first four months, then only in his crib at nap time/bed time. Around 11 mths he started tossing it from the crib so I just removed it and we've never looked back.

This is the wubanubb we have, we called him Quackers.

My dad still uses it for naps and bedtime. It saved my boobs in the beginning. Also I wanted to try and prevent thumb sucking cause it's easier to take away a binkie then a thumb.

Dd still has a paci for nap and bed. I'd rather that than thumb sacking. Easier habit to break. Even though I'm terrified to take it away. We tried so many and she wouldn't take any. Finally at about 4 weeks someone gave us a random 6mo+ maam paci and she loved them.

I practically forced it on DD1 during her 6th week of life. She cried A LOT, hindsight I'm pretty sure I just needed to plop on the couch and nurse her more. Anywho, she used one until 1 yr. At that point I just cut the nipple back a little each night, and she was done with it within a week. I was really concerned about thumb sucking, as I did that when I was little and ended up pushing out my upper teeth. I figured orthodontically designed was best.

I tried to use one with DD2, but she wanted nothing to do with it.

For what it's worth, I switched to pumping with DD1 at 6w because of the crying (was sure she was hungry and needed to see how much she was getting). DD2 nursed until 1 year. I can't say, if BFing is on your radar, whether a paci would have messed anything up.

I have found if the baby wants to suck on something he will wether it's your breast, bottle, pacifier or thumb. Since the first to options in extremes can make the baby a super chunky monkey, and the last option is way to stinking hard to get rid of if they get to attached. Pacifiers make for a great tool to safely pacify your child on that note:

My twins had to have a weird off brand pacifier that someone got me for my shower and I only had two and they both ALWAYS had to have one and I was forever looking for those things... they learned to pull it off the clip and throw it at around 4 - 5 months? but didn't give them up until about 7 months. I think I lost most of my baby weight running around from room to room checking under, behind, and in the furniture looking for those silly things.

My mom used them with us for a little while... She always says, "You can take the Binky away but not the fingers." I'm going with her logic. lol

I tried so many brands, but my son was only interested if I was physically holding it in his mouth, which defeated the purpose. The moment I let go, he'd spit it out and refuse to take it again.

He'd comfort nurse for hours, so a paci would've saved me a lot of discomfort.

My son never took to one even though we offered it. We never had an issue with thumb sucking either. I think we just got very lucky with him though because he was incredibly laid back as an infant.

I thought I'd be anti-pacifier, but after my kids tore up my nipples for a few days, I gave in.

They both used MAM pacifiers. They liked that shape the best I guess. The other brands always got spit out.

I BF then EP'd for #1 who had latch issues (not-paci related) and BF #2 both for 13+ months. The pacifiers never interfered with our nursing relationship.

At 6m, no more paci during daytime play, at 12m I took them away for good.

At 3 weeks DD started cluster feeding. I tried every pacifier in the house until she finally decided on the MAM. It was great because every time I stopped nursing she would wake up and cry, but if I slipped that paci in, she'd fall right back asleep. Total life saver. She wasn't really attached to it. Only really used it at nap time around 8 months, then by around 16 months we had removed them completely. She never even noticed.

I'm really hoping the new LO will take one also.

We used Soothies for a few months as recommended by a LC and DS loved them. He also really liked the Gumdrop and MAM.

I guess I was a bad mom though and never bought the next step past infant on any of the pacifiers so he quickly got over them.

My DD had whatever the hospital gave us for a while. She uses NUK now and refuses any other type. She will be 2 in December and I plan on letting her go a little while longer with it.... am I the only one getting bombarded by family members (and strangers) about why she still has the paci?! Im not even nice when people bring it up anymore!! I kinda just want to say "F YOU" anytime someone bring up the paci!!

I had this problem with my twins the first few months than I was given a completely uselessly stupid tip from a bystander in the store... she said, "pull on it a little as he sucks, not to remove it but just to pull it away from his mouth and wait for him to cry or suck it back in himself"... I tried it one day after doing it like 30 times per kid they started keeping them in their mouths.
