need gift idea: 3 yr old girl, fun for dad

So my brave friend is planning a b-day party for her 3 year old (to be) while my friend is expecting #2 within the same time frame of the planned party.  So I thought I would be fun to buy a toy for her daughter that would be a good father/daughter activity.  Any suggestions?  Budget $50.

    My girls and their dad (an engineer) love MagnaTiles.  Hours of fun building!  But I also like the PP's suggestion of an experience.

    I'm no so sure about an experience.  I think it's one of those things that sounds great to the giver but is a pain logistically with a new baby at home. 

    It would need to be something very flexible with a long expiration date. 

    The last thing you want to do is add extra stress on the new parents in giving them another commitment at a very busy time.

    What about baking supplies? Her own (rubber bottom) mixing bowl, spoons, apron, cook book, supplies, mixes, sprinkles, cup cake wrappers, etc.? This would be one to get clearance on for sure, in case Dad isn't up for that experience.

    How about something like Kiwi Crate?  I gifted a 3 month subscription to my goddaughter for her 3rd birthday.  With a coupon code I found online, the subscription was $50.

    I second a building toy: a junior lego set, magnaTiles and magformers are both fantastic and perfect for that age (and long after).

    Magna Tiles, a board game (Shoots & Ladders, Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That, & Cranium Hullabaloo were big hits in our house at that age), crafts, Legos.

    You gals rock!  I ended up finding a nice building set that is girly but fun along with a book and doll that she can play with independently.  Hopefully her dad will enjoy the playset too...well with his daughter.
