NWMR: Play kitchens

I am planning on getting DS a play kitchen--but there are so many different kinds. Leaning towards either a Little Tikes or a Kidcraft kitchen. Thought that maybe some of you might have some good recommendations---or ones to stay away from if you hate the one you have. Thanks in advance.

  • We got DS this one for his 2nd birthday and he loves it!  I like that it's more neutral and it's not a big plastic thing considering it sits out in the main part of our house.  It coordinates with all of our dark wood furniture.  It took a while to put together, but it wasn't very difficult, feels sturdy and will last for a long time!

  • We have the white Kidcraft vintage kitchen I believe. It has been wonderful. I like the look a lot more than the plastic ones, and it has held up fabulously. That said it did take us about 2.5 hrs. to assemble it Christmas Eve last year. Not difficult, just time consuming.

My sister gave us this one last Christmas and DD loves it:

Like a PP, I was also assembling it last Christmas Eve (while 9 months pregnant) :)

  • I bought DD the Melissa and Doug one off amazon...I waited via camelcamelcamel for the price to drop in to the $70's.

It is not too big, not too small.  I like that it fits in the corner, the colors, and that it is wood.

Honestly I would get the one that fits your space and budget.  LO won't care if it is wood or plastic.  That it allows for pretend play is the most important thing!

  • We also have the Melissa and Doug wooden kitchen from Amazon and it's the perfect size! DS got one for Christmas last year and still hasn't gotten enough of it.

  • I bought ours used at a children's store - my sole criteria were that it was a play kitchen and it was already assembled. The first one we bought I assembled on Christmas Eve and it was a beating - not hard, just really tedious. For $50 I scored one of the big plastic kitchens, fully assembled, with all the gear (plates, food, etc.). Just something to consider.

  • We have the modern kidcraft one - the one that's supposed to look like granite countertops and stainless steel.  It's held up really well over the last year, and has taken a ton of abuse.  We let DD put water in the sink to "wash" her dishes and all.

Two things to keep in mind:

    1. Height.  Can you DS reach everything now?  Will he outgrow it quickly?  DD can barely reach the top shelf on the kitchen now (she's tiny) but at least I'm not worried about her outgrowing it in a year.

    2. Assembly.  Don't leave it til christmas eve like I did.  It took HOURS.

  • Thanks all this has been really helpful!

  • I am looking at the little tikes cook and grow I believe it is called. There are height adjustments which is great. LO is only 1 but loves play kitchens. And the kitchen as a whole isn't huge. We don't have a ton of space right now.
