2nd Trimester

Pelvic girdle pain

Hey y'all.  I think this may be my first time posting here - I'm a regular over in March 15, almost 19 weeks pregnant.

So I have pelvic girdle pain and it's pretty bad.  I have my anatomy scan on Tuesday next week and I'm gonna talk to my OB about it but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what you've done about it?  It sucks because it hurts when I get up from sitting, hurts when I'm laying in bed, and it really hurts when I change positions sleeping.  I ordered a Snoogle from Amazon.  Has that helped anyone?  I read you can get PT for it so I may go that route.  It just kind of scares me because I'm only halfway through my pregnancy and I hate to think of how much worse it could get :(

Thanks everyone!

  • Hi @wishiwaspreggo!  :-h

I just experienced this for real for the first time last night. I got up off the couch to get something out of the kitchen and had sharp, stabbing pain in my lower pelvic area. I actually had to double over to make it stop hurting. Yikes! I hope you figure something out! Also, I'm open to suggestions as well.

  • Why hello, @kcbizme :)

Yeah, it's weird.  My vagina, inner thighs, hips, and butt all hurt.  I of course asked Dr. Google first and it turns out I have all the symptoms of PGP.  Something about the ligaments being looser in the pelvis and not being able to hold it rigid so everything stretches.  Kind of makes me worried my whole damn pelvis will gave in on itself :-S

There's a certain way you're supposed to walk and you should put a pillow between your legs - that's about all I could gather from the interwebz short of seeing a physical therapist who can manipulate your pelvis to make you feel better.  It's supposed to get progressively worse which is why I'm worried about it.  For now I'm okay, but when I get up from my chair to do something I waddle for a good 15-20 steps until things settle back to where they're supposed to be.  It's embarrassing.

  • @wishiwaspreggo I already sleep with a pillow between my legs because my right hip gives me so much of a problem already. I can only imagine how it will be after I push this baby out..

I have one leg shorter than the other which makes everything more difficult for me.. scoliosis, hip problems, pelvic pain, back pain, neck pain, etc. It's tons of fun.

I, too, have right hip pain. I had the same with my son. It got significantly better after he was born

I'm hoping the Snoogle will help me feel more comfortable in bed.  I get all achy in my nether regions unless I lay on my side.  No fun.

Sounds like you have more pain issues than me, though!  Sorry about that!  I've always had low back pain due to my enormous boobs.  And my shoulders always hurt from the tension I carry, and my knees are a little achy but it's all bearable.

Ah, the magic of pregnancy :P It would be so lovely to be able to soak in a hot jetted tub.  Such a shame that it's harmful to the baby.

  • @wishiwaspreggo The worst part is, I've had hip pain since I was in junior high. I've been x-rayed by multiple docs and nobody has been able to figure out why I hurt. I'm only hoping it doesn't get worse!
  • I would definitely ask your doctor. Are you sure its not some sort or round ligament pain? Im on the March 15 babies too! 15 weeks and counting!

Good luck, and I'm sure everything will be fine!

  • @rachelcalderon525 - Nah, it's not RLP.  I've had that a few times - kind of feels like a tightening of the outer stomach and groin region.  What I have is pretty persistent and doesn't go away.  When I'm sitting it's fine but when I stand up from sitting everything in my pelvis aches for a few minutes.  Same thing happens when I get up from laying down.  Hurts to lay on my back but that's fine since I'm a side sleeper.  It's okay though, it's not exactly unbearable :) Just kind of annoying and mildly embarrassing when I waddle.

I'm hoping my recently purchased Snoogle will help with it.  I'm gonna start swimming again soon so I can relieve the pressure off my joints for a while.

  • So I had a new symptom pop up last night.. I got up out of a chair and started walking and had a stabbing pain in my butt cheek (deep, like near my tailbone) and it definitely was NOT muscle pain.
  • Yes, totally normal and really sucks :(

My best advice is to visit a chiropractor and keep your pelvis and spine in proper alignment. It has helped me a ton. Other than that, learn to move slowly when changing positions. I have a snoogle and it doesn't help that much. Actually the snoogle provides way too much neck support and throws me out of whack. And it is a pain in the ass to switch sides in the middle of the night with your body wrapped around a giant pillow. I think it will be more useful as I get further along though. Make sure you put the neck/head support low enough towards your shoulders that your head is not propped up and out of alignment with your spine.

  • I'm thinking about just getting a $10 body pillow from Wally World and calling it a day. We already fight over bed space, so I can only imagine how that's going to be.
