Thrush/yeast help

DD is 3w. In the hospital the LC noticed my one breast was cracked and the other was pretty banged up too. The following week the crack ended up bleeding one day but started to get better. I then began to have pain in the breasts all the time, even when not nursing. DD wasn't gaining weight and had a diaper rash. Saw the LC again last Wednesday who said we both has yeast/thrush. We started medications Wednesday night. She said it would get worse before getting better. Now I get the pain in the other breast after nursing, so I was coughing that up to being worse. Anyone have any experiences? I figured we'd be nursing pain free now at 6 days with meds. It's making me want to throw in the towel :(
About to be 2 under 2 up in here!

Re: Thrush/yeast help

  • Thrush can be hard to deal with , often
A very long time to fully eliminate .You can beat it though ! Don't give up :)

what helped when I had it was letting my nipples air out as much as possible to limit the moisture on them, I basically was shirtless/braless as much as possible , and by rinsing them with water/ vinegar immediately after each feed and patting them dry .

Good luck ! Hope you start feeling better soon!

  • I am going through this now!!! It is making me ccrazy!!! My lo is 7 weeks old. I was just bf until it became too painful. Now I am just pumping until I clear up a bit more.

Lo started meds on Saturday and it is now starting to look better. I got my meds on Monday and even with doing vinager since Friday night mine is looking/feeling worse now. I am really hoping to is the "worse " before the better.

I really hand it to women who exclusively pump. I feel like between pumping, then feeding, then baby medicine, then changing I can't do anything else all day!

Yesterday I almost broke down and considered stopping bf. But I had to make myself realize that this will be done soon. This is not how it is going to be forever!!!!
  • PP had great advice. I dealt with thrush for the 4 weeks of LO's life, so I feel your pain. I agree with vinegar rinse and letting your nipples dry. Also, Change breast pads any time they are damp. Take a probiotic and eat yogurt. Pump if you need a break. Sterilize any pump parts that touch your breast and anything that goes in baby's mouth like bottle nipples and pacifiers. My LC also suggested not using antibacterial soap, washing all towels daily, and reducing sugar, yeast and dairy intake.

Thrush is painful but it does get better. Hang in there! You're doing great.
  • yeah, thrush is a real pain. great advice above- probiotics, vinegar rinse, sterilize all pump parts/bottles. also wash all your bras in the washing machine with a generous cupful of vinegar. your LO should also be treated with an antifungal oral rinse. you can give your LO probiotics, as well- if you get the kind in a capsule you can pour some of the powder onto your finger and swab it on the inside of her cheek. for the diaper rash, you can get a prescription antifungal or use over-the-counter antifungal cream (the kind marketed for jock itch).
  • @Sing2phins‌ I had heard mixed info on storing breast milk when being treated for thrush. All doctors I consulted think it's a waste to toss. My pediatrician recommended freezing and waiting as long as possible to use, as babies become less likely to get thrush as they hit 6 months. Another recommendation I got was to mix that milk with other milk. I did not and will not toss my stash.
  • My LC highly recommended gentian violet but I never tried it....I also couldn't find it.
  • I never think of amazon for stuff like that! Thanks!!
  • My Lc told me to use Silverette silver cups i bought on amazon and Sulver is a natural antifungal so i disn't need to use any chemicals and felt better in 24 hours! Good luck!
  • Knottie 30597354, it helped thrush for your nipples? Thanks!
