Freezer Stash--How Much?

I've built a small stash of breast milk...about 5 bags of 2oz each. How much should I keep in the freezer? The reason i ask is I'd like to move away from supplementing with formula and figured I could use my stash for that. I don't have a great supply---i get about 2oz if I pump when I'm full--and I'll be pumping when I go back to work.

Re: Freezer Stash--How Much?

  • I keep as much as possible because it lasts the longest in the freezer.
  • Loading the player...
  • My LC the other day was telling me to keep 75oz (if possible) at all times in the freezer, it's about 3 days worth. I think if you want to use it to supplement that us fine too. When you go back to work you can just pump for the next day.
  • I was told 4oz is a good amount to store at a time as that is what they'll typcially take in a feeding.

  • Um... It's been a week since my lo was born. Ive been dealing with such crazy engorgment and having to pump my bobs down before she can even latch and then sometimes after morn feedings because I swear my boobs will fall off. I've got 165 oz already

I freeze every extra bit I have. I want her to have breastmilk as long as she can. I also like the idea of having multiple days' worth in the event I get sick or something happens and I can't nurse as often. I've already got a pretty good stash going in our deep freezer.

When you're freezing it, take into consideration how much you're storing, where you'll be storing it, and when you plan on using it. The shelf life of the freezer attached to your fridge and a deep freezer is different. (3-6 months vs ~12 months, I think)

yeah...we only have the freezer in thr kitchen, so I was only counting on it lasting 3 months. I'd love to invest in a deep freezer eventually. I go bavk to work next week, so I'm hoping that I wont burn through the stash too quickly. If actually considered skipping a feeding and just doin the bottle once a day so I can get a full 2 oz

@mamakate12345‌ I'll only get 2 oz if I pump when I'm full. If I pump after feeding throughout the day, I get less than an oz overall. I can usually get 2 oz if I combine 2 days worth of pumping

  • I go back to work in one month. I've started freezing milk in oz increments as that's usually what i get when pumping due 15 mins after a feeding. I'm hoping to have at least 60oz by the time i go back.
