Naps: Where and How?!

DS2 used to sleep so well in the swing, but here lately (11 weeks) I can really only count on him sleeping if I'm wearing him. I'm exhausted, and he is SO flipping cranky! He hates being swaddled and thinks the pacifier is only good to use as a projectile. So where is your LO napping these days, and for the love of Pete, how do you get him or her to sleep?!

Re: Naps: Where and How?!

  • My DD sleeps amazing during the day. It's nighttime where were are starting to have trouble. At home she usually naps on her swing or on me sometimes. At grandma's during the day, she naps on the couch (supervised), a swing or her bassinette. When having trouble, we tuck her in with a fluffy blanket, give a paci and play very loud rain sounds. That always does the trick for us. Maybe your LO would like some white noise?

  • We use the swing. I tuck the blankets around his arms and he gets them out and puts his hands over his face. The naps are typically an hour or less.
  • This is probably not much help to you, but I swaddle dd and she either sleeps in her bassinet or pack in play. For us the key to her not hating the swaddle was to make sure it was tight enough that she couldn't get out.  I imagine I'm going to have problems with her napping once I stop swaddling her though.

  • Mine sleeps like a champ at night. Days are a mess. She basically stopped sleeping in her swing a month ago. Now she pretty much cat naps only being held. You put her down and she is instantly wide awake. I think it's the no swaddle during naps. I have resorted to letting her nap on her tummy sometimes. Supervised of course. So I get a break.

  • DITTO. Omg. Are you running surveillance in my house ?!? This is my 11 week old too. She was so chill until a few days ago. I'm trying everything to find her new pattern.
  • DD sleeps 7-8 hours at night but hardly at all during the day. If she naps it's only when she's being held and half the time she's using my boob as a pacifier (she refuses to take a real pacifier). This results in her being cranky because she's tired later on. I've debated swaddling her for naps but since we've been swaddling her at night I'm worried she only associates it with bedtime and don't want to screw up that.

  • My kid uses to think naps were a terrible idea.. Then he started taking 3-4 hour naps. Wish he had done that when I was on mat leave :/

  • Swing, with pacifier, loud white noise, and blanket tucked pretty tightly around her arms so she can't startle herself. Her naps are short though -- 30 to 45 minutes.
  • We have no specific napping location, but she does nap every three hours during the day for an hour or so each time. I'm usually out and about in the mornings so she will nap in her stroller or fall asleep in her car seat. When we are home and she starts to get fussy I know she's ready for a nap and there are two ways that work, one she's in the newborn lounger with a pacifier in her mouth and she puts herself to sleep, or two I lay her on her side on our bed or the couch, side lying is the key, because she loves sleeping on her side, I put a pacifier in her mouth and I lay directly in front of her, we stare at each other until she falls asleep, this always works when she is tired.
  • My LO has been sleeping from 8-6 most nights. Napping during the day has been interesting. I like to go walking after her 10:30 feeding for like an hour and she usually naps then. When we get back to the house we have some play time on the floor, a little mamaRoo, and the 2pm feeding. Getting her to nap in the afternoon is rough. Sometimes she'll be so fussy I just want to nurse her again, but I'll walk around the house with her and rock her and bounce with a binki and most days she'll drift off on my chest. Otherwise the RnP with a little foot tapping will work and a couple of times I've put her in the crib to nap. Either way I'll never get her to stay asleep for longer then an hour but usually 30-45 min. I try for eat, play, sleep and most days it works.
