Food/feeding suggestions

Jadzia has decided to be even more picky than her sister when it comes to eating. Stubborn little thing wont even try new things. Currently she eats pouches, veggie cheese puffs, club crackers, gerber cereal bars, and yogurt melts. I can sometimes get her to eat a few bites of toast. Anything new I offer is either ignored ot immediately tossed on the floor. No tasting no investigating right to the floor. She flails and shakes her head at attempts to spoon feed her. Nikita was in daycare by now so I am sure that helped her eating habits. I just dont know what to try next to get her to eat more/better. Any tips or tricks?

Looking for ideas to get my stubborn picky eater to eat better.

Re: Food/feeding suggestions

  • Tofu cubes, chicken pieces, chickpeas, or black beans? This is how I get protein into my picky eater and she can feed those to herself.

  • Any luck with pancakes? I have added bananas to make them sweeter and get some fruit in. I also made whole wheat pumpkin waffles, which he loves! He also loves muffins and breads, like banana, apple or pumpkin bread.

  • She's allergic to eggs and pb. It seems anything that isnt the consistency of toast or a cracker gets immediate rejection. That stuff she tends to leave on her tray as if she doesnt even want to touch it. I tried mini waffles toasted vs microwaved today and she at least poked it a little before tossing it. I tend to try new things first thing in the morning so she has to be hungry. I think it would be less frustrating if she at least tasted it.
  • Hummus. My guy loves hummus sandwiches.

  • I second the black beans suggestion...we were going through a really picky stage and I all of a sudden discovered he liked the beans! Otherwise...keep offering a variety and she may move past it? I have heard LOs need to be offered different foods up to 15 times sometimes, before they're willing to accept them...

Veggie muffins are a hit here.

Noelle is really independent so she has to self feed. Her faves are avocado, blueberries, black beans.

What about a rice cake with some sort of nut-alternative, like sunbutter? Or smeared with avocado.

If she likes that sort of texture, I'd hide stuff that way.

Vinny is currently team sandwich/blueberries and pouches. PBJ but at school they do sunflower butter.
We tried the veggie muffins. No go.
But he will eat corn kernels and corn bread. (Sometimes).

  • Do you give her a spoon and/or fork? Ben can be very uncooperative at meal time, but if he had a utensil in hand and can feed himself, it is a mess, but he dives right in.

  • Thanks for the ideas ladies :)
  • This sounds exactly like my DS. I gave him pouches until he was 2 1/2 because he just would not eat any fruit except banana and would not touch a veg. When DD started on pouches, he stopped eating them saying they are baby food. I just wanted to get fruit and veg into him.

I feel your frustration because he also not even try new things. He also only wanted crackers. Even now his diet is a lot of grilled cheese, chicken fingers, and pizza. It took a lot of time, but I finally got him to eat an apple, meatballs, and spaghetti. It took a long time of offering to get him to eat the few things he does now. He still will not try stuff based on looks, but we have gotten him to try a bite of steak, a bite of burger with some coaxing. He still will not try any chicken unless it is chicken fingers.

Do you eat with her? If not, maybe start there. This and starting table food late are the mistakes I think I made with DS. My DH gets home late so I would feed DS and then eat with DH. I was also very lax with advancing to table foods because the gagging scared me and I was so afraid of choking. I decided with DD I was going to do everything opposite. By 9 months she was on all table foods and no more pouches. I now cook dinner and eat with the kids and save dinner on the stove for when DH comes home. DD eats just about everything and will try new things.

  • Keep offering, and mix up the mode of delivery to see of that helps (in the high chair, not in the high chair, while being held, sitting on the floor, from your plate, from her plate, from a fork, from a spoon, with fingers, etc.).

Sometimes I walk around the grocery store picking things up and seeing how Luke reacts to the package. If he pushes it away we move on. If he gets really excited, we sometimes open it right there in the aisle for him to try so he associates the actual food with the package he liked.

And relax. It really, really will be ok.

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!
DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome.
131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
  • Is feeding time going any better @blairwitch?
  • I got her to eat grilled cheese :)  Thinking about sticking some meat in there.  But grapes got tossed (I even bought the tiny ones) Banana she refuses to touch...even though she stares longingly at me while I eat it.

    Baby steps right....baby steps :)
  • My baby gets bored eating at the high chair or table but if we let her stand she will eat anything. Ex. Tonight she ate pad thai chicken (first dinner) and lamb, lentils, and rice (second dinner). Normally she refuses any meat or beans.
  • I eat with lo and I take bites and make mmm mm sounds and move my head left and right like its so yummy. She starts doing the same and eating. It works sometimes.
