Creeper with a question...

So first of all, I promise I'm not a total creeper.  I'll try to intro soon, I just need some advice on a time sensitive matter.

Here's the deal...
My husband and I have to go to California for a conference in November. Baby will be 7 months and cannot attend the conference. The original plan was to leave her in Wisconsin with my MIL for the 10 days we'll be gone. I EP and was planning to use the stashed milk in my freezer for that time and pump while we were away.  BUT... I got mastitis last month and my supply took a dip (and never returned).  I've had to break into my freezer stash and now there's not enough for the 10 days.

I've got a couple options. Either we can take MIL with us to California so I can pump and give the baby the milk or I can supplement with formula to make up the difference.

I know most of you aren't medical professionals so I'm not asking what's best from a medical standpoint.  If you were in this situation as a mom, what would you do?

Re: Creeper with a question...

  • If MIL is willing to travel to California I think it's great if she could join you. 10 days seems like a long time to be gone... you could sneak some time with your LO if MIL cared for her in California. I'm a California local and we're having great weather. Could be fun for the whole family!

  • Personally I'd take MIL. I was actually planning on doing something similar for a potential job, I ended not getting it, but training would have been out of state for almost 2 weeks. I exclusively breastfeed and I would have taken my mom (who would be child care when ever I return to work) with me because 1) I don't have a stash large enough to use for the time I would be gone, 2) I'd miss my LO too much and 3) I personally don't want to use formula, my goal is Breast milk until one. With all that said, is it feasible to bring mil with you? Can she do it? Financially are you able to pay for it?

  • MIL says she's willing to. I can tell she's a little hesitant probably because she still has two high schoolers at home. I know she wants to help us out too though...and get to spend time with her granddaughter. Financially it's not a big deal. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't being completely irrational by wanting to tote my MIL and LO across the country. My DH thinks I should just supplement but I'm determined to make it to a year if at all possible.
  • I say bring MIL and LO with you if it works out.  We've done formula almost right from the start so that part wouldn't be a big deal, but I don't think I could go 10 days without my LO at this point.  Especially for something like a work conference.  I mean, it sounds like you guys will be able to do some fun stuff, but it would be a loooong 10 days if I had to do boring work stuff AND be away from LO.

  • I would also take MIL with you if possible.  I have not even left LO for a night yet,  10 days just seems so long.

  • Take MIL. I wouldn't want to supplement with formula or be away from LO that long. I also haven't even left LO for one night yet.
  • I'd take MIL with me.

  • If you can swing it I'd probably take MIL with you. I don't think there's anything wrong with formula, but I can't imagine being away from LO for that long at this point.

  • I would absolutely take her (or someone) if that was an option.  I could not do 10 days away from LO at this point.
