emptying breast and pumping

Recently I've noticed the only time i get a decent pull of milk is when i use smaller bottles to pump into, my breasts feel empty and engorgment is prevented for more than 3 hours. The only issue is when I use the smaller 4 oz bottles they seem like they'll overflow before I'm finished pumping.

when I use a 6 oz bottle to pump into my breasts don't empty very well and at best I'll get 2 ozs and in a few hours my breasts feel pretty engorged.

I have a medela PIS and i feel maybe it's lost suction/suction is weak? Idk what the deal is but it sucks...

    What do the membranes do exactly? When should they be replaced?

    I have a PIS too. I have used the 5 oz bottles and the 3 oz ones and it doesn't seem to make a difference. The time of day does though. Early morning and late night I get the most milk.

    The membranes are what make the suction, so definitely try replacing them -- they're super cheap.

    Women produce the most milk in the overnight hours, so totally normal that you get the most in early AM and late night.

    And just FYI, your breasts are never actually EMPTY. There is always milk available to the baby, they just feel softer when they aren't as full. It helped me to learn that when it seemed like I was never "empty" myself.

    I guess i should say when pumping i still felt engorged after 15 mins when i had the larger bottles on (while i had only pumped 2 oz) but when I have small 4 oz bottles i feel soft and have filled the entire 4 oz bottle in 15 mins...

    Not to hijack but how often should you replace the membranes? I had no idea about this!
