2 year old naps at daycare, but not at home

Hi all!  My 2.4 year old DD takes a 2 hour nap during the week at daycare, but then at home on the weekends she refuses to nap!  And she needs the sleep - she ends up tantrumy mess in the afternoon, and then we struggle to put her to bed.

We've tried mimicking our bedtime routine for naps, but it just does not work.

What should we be doing differently?

  • This happened to us as well.  We started later naps on weekends and that seemed to work for us.  Otherwise, DS would fall asleep at 5p and then wake up at 8p ready to party.

  • It helps us to makes sure there is active outside time in the morning.
  • This is me too. I hate it. Dd naps from 2-4 at daycare but really inconsistently at home. It's to the point where I am questioning if my daycare is telling the truth about her nap schedule.
  • We do quiet time but DS is four now and almost done napping. It really works and sometimes he drifts to sleep during it.

I won't lie. We've occasionally ended up handing him the tablet to get him to settle into quiet time. It worked. I regret nothing.
  • This happened to us and we just stopped her naps at home and put her to bed early.
  • Like others we have lots of activity in the morning, do naps a little later at home (2pm vs. 1pm at daycare). I also outline what we will do in the evening and specify that he won't get to do that stuff if he doesn't nap. He likes to have one of us sit with him while he falls asleep so we do that - usually takes 10-15 minutes and I just read off my phone. But he has to be in bed. If he tries to get out of bed I put him back. If he tantrums, I leave the room. It took a couple of weekends when he was 2 to learn that tantrum=noone sits with me and since then it's been mostly a breeze.

  • They nap at noon at DC and we have a really hard time sticking to their schedule every weekend, especially during sports seasons. So DH naps with DS in our bed whenever we get home - usually by 1:00 but sometimes as late as 2:30. If DS doesn't get a nap every day he's a bear for several days after. It's not perfect, but DH likes getting naps and I like getting time to run errands with just the girls (or alone while the girls play at home!).

  • we have the same issue as well. DS takes 2 hour naps at daycare, but for the past couple of months he often skips his nap on the weekend. for a while we were going out to a playground or something and aiming to come back around 1 PM so he would fall asleep in the car. lately that hasn't been working. we try to get him to nap, but he won't do it. then he either passes out at about 5 or 6 (like he literally just keels over asleep), or he is a mess and then we put him to be really early. we've been trying the enforced quiet time thing lately- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. i feel your pain!
  • Same boat here. I take DD to the barn for 2 hours on the weekend mornings so she ends up falling asleep in the far for 30 minutes on the way home.  That kills her nap but by 4 PM she is a cranky mess.  So she'll often nap again around 430 for an hour and then hit the sack at her normal bedtime of 730 PM.  But that means we have an overtired child all afternoon.  Fun.
