Working Moms

Tuesday GTKY

Per the results of last week's polling there will be usually 2 questions. So let's get to it:

1. What did you want to be when you were little?
2. What are your usual working hours? Do you like them or would you prefer to move them earlier/later/other?

  • 1. Sailor --- Horse rider in a circus --- Architect --- Bookshop owner
    2. Usually 8:50-4:50. If I'm busy I put in a couple of hours after 9pm. Works for me since I also have flexibility to work from home if needed.

  • 1.  Teacher.  Always wanted to be a teacher.  But I know that I would not do well dealing with parents.

    2. Officially Mon, Tues, Thurs in office 9-5, no lunch.  Home Wed, Fri 9-5, no lunch.  But I typically check/answer emails from 5:45-6:15am, then again on the train from 8:20-8:50.  I also take con calls as early as 5:30am some days, or on the train.  In the evenings, I have con calls almost every evening on the train.  Wed/Fri I push them until after 8pm.  I check emails on the trainride home, as well as after kids go to bed.  Sometimes I log back in to plow through some work.

I average about 50-55hrs per week.
  • I wanted to be a veterinarian. I don't think I could have handled a dog or cat dying, though.

I worked M-Th, 8:45-5 or 5:15. Fridays 8:45-3:00. 1 hour lunch every day. I like my hours, especially on Fridays! I also have a 5 minute commute so I get to home for lunch every day.

DS goes to preschool next door to work so I take him about 7:30 and come back home for breakfast. I love the routine we've established!

    1.  I wanted to be a game show host - still kinda do.  It would be so fun to just give money away and make people happy all day!

    2. M-F, 9-5.  It's decent, although I would love the opportunity to WFH one day a week.  I do like that since I get in at 9, I can spend some quality time with my DD in the mornings :-)
  • i wanted to be a teacher, and then a veterinarian.

i work M-F 10 AM-6 PM, with an hour for lunch. these hours are good because i miss morning rush hour, and it was nice when DS was an infant and i wasn't getting a lot of sleep. but, i still hit traffic in the evenings and don't get home until 6:30 or 6:45 (or on really bad nights, 7). it leaves very little time to do anything, and DS has adapted himself to these hours with a late bedtime, so we basically have zero alone time in the evenings. i wish i could work maybe 30 hours a week so i could leave earlier and miss the evening rush hour- unfortunately that is not an option (if i went to part-time, i'd obviously lose my benefits and i'd only be able to work a maximum of 15 hours/week).
  • 1. What did you want to be when you were little? Waitress, then teacher then a lawyer. I am none of those now.

    2. What are your usual working hours? Do you like them or would you prefer to move them earlier/later/other?  Usual: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri. Wed from home with varied hours.  I work about 40-45 hours per week.  I have flexibility in my actual hours as long as my work is complete.  I came in today at 8 and will leave at 4.  Ideally I would work only 4 days per week with one day to get all the house stuff done - laundry, grocery shopping, general errands. I am very grateful for the flexibility my job and my manager allow.

  • 1. Writer (novelist). I still dream of doing this and maybe someday I'll actually have time to actually write for myself again.

    2. I work M-F 8-5 with an hour lunch. I wish I could either work 9-5 or 8-4 and eliminate the hour lunch, but it's company policy that everyone takes an hour for lunch. I can skip it from time to time, but I can't do it on a regular basis. Ideally, I'd like to work M-Th 7-5 (10 hours) with Fridays off. That's really not going to happen in my current job.

    2. 8:30-5 which is fine so I can see the kids about an hour in the morning and a couple hours at night.

  • 1) An astronaut. NO idea why and its kind of funny because now I am claustrophobic and would hate to be in a space ship!

    2) I work like 6:45am to 4:45. I like coming in early, but I hate working until 4:45 because I have over an hour commute home from the city, so with traffic I dont get home until 6 or later. Then its a race against the clock to get dinner on the table, do baths and bed time.  Id love to work like 7-3pm or have the option to either work part time or work from home...but neither can happen. I am just burnt out and vacations and time off do not rejuvenate me anymore.

  • 1. Author or librarian or scientist

    2. I generally work 9 hour days, 7:30-4:40 or 6-3.  I take a lunch one day a week.  I usually log on before I actually sit down to work and I typically work 30-60 minutes after the times listed above, plus often time in the evenings. But I work from home, so being able to walk up to the school to retrieve the kids a couple days a week, then do the day care pick up at 4:00, is really nice. I am often logged in while making dinner/doing homework/etc. and at least three days a week leave the kids downstairs to jump back on a call before 6.

  • 1) I don't remember. I changed my mind too often and never settled on one thing. I always wanted to be a mother. Other than that, I'm flexible.
    2) 9-3 until I go back to full time at the end of the month, when it will be more 8-5 but flexible. I like my schedule and I love the flexibility to work from home or odd hours as needed.

  • 1. Probably a teacher, then a psychologist.

    2. I work 7:15a - 4:15ish pm, with a short lunch, and get every other Friday off.  I have the flexibility to work from home occasionally or if me or the kids have an appointment.  That schedule works pretty well for me.

  • 1. I wanted to be a travel agent
    2. I work in the morning from home from about 7-8:45, then head into the office 9:15-4:30.
  • 1. Professional reader. Then actor or (once I knew about the job) stage manager.

    2. They're pretty random. 9-530ish. Unless it's 830-445. Or 10-630. Or I work from home, in which case, it's 830-6 with an hour lunch. Literally nobody cares about my work hours. Least of all me!

  • 1. Radio personality (specifically on Chicago's Q101).

    2. About 9am to 4pm. It's a typical office environment here; most people are here 8:30 to 4:30. But my boss totally lets me get away with coming in late and leaving early :) I like my schedule and I love that my boss is so flexible.

  • 1. Historian or lawyer. I wanted to be one of those lawyers on TV that go to court and give brilliant speeches. I'm a lawyer now but never go to court and never give brilliant speeches. Haha.

    2. I'm usually in the office from 8 to 5:30. I work after DS goes to bed or very early in the mornings at home.
  • 1. A journalist, and I still would love to do more writing than I am now.

    2. I work 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. M-F, and 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. during the summers. I work for an elementary principal association, so we have lighter workload during the summers. I wish I had some flexibility to work from home. Would love to go 9-3 when the kiddos go to school. I am fortunate to work at the same place as my husband.

    2. I try to be in the office by 8:45 and stay until at least 430 Monday-Thursday. Fridays during our off seasons I cut out around 3 and will eventually just not work them at all in April, May, September and October if I can. During our busy times, I am here or on the road until at least 5 every day with shorter lunch breaks.

  • 1. Artist working in a hella cool studio high-rise loft downtown in a big city :)

    2. 8:30-5 with a half hour lunch (sometimes a full hour if I have an errand to run)  unless DH & I have to switch daycare pick-up due to a meeting or something, in which case I'd be in 7:30-4:00.  I MUCH prefer the earlier schedule to avoid traffic, but DH's commute is worse than mine so he got to choose if he wanted to go in early or late.  We stagger schedules so DS has a shorter day at daycare.

  • I want to stop lurking and participate.

    1.  I wanted to be a Dancer (modern/lyrical) or a Jazz singer in those dirty clubs in old movies

    2. 7:45 - 4pm M-F.  I have an hour and a half commute this schedule beats the traffic.  I work from home when I need to.

  • 1.  A Doctor.  I was so dedicated to this, I spent my senior year of high school in a special program where I shadowed doctors around a hospital.  Then I went to college and nearly flunked out of Chemistry and Biology.  (I was a straight A kid in high school, but apparently I went to a really easy high school.)

    2.  8:45-5:15.  I wish I could work 7:30-3:30 or 4, I'd save 1.5 hours of commuting time a day, and get out early enough to play with DD before bed.

  • 1. Poison groupee.

    2. Tues-Fri, 1pm to 11pm. But hopefully I'll be changing to M-F, 4:30am to 1pm so I can start enjoying evenings home with the fam.
One boy (11.26.12) and one girl (2.28.14)
  • 1. A veterinarian. I love animals and still dream about it occasionally :)
    2. M, tues, thurs- 8-5; Wed- 8-12; Friday- 8-4
I have a two minute commute and have a lot of flexibility in my day, so I feel like this is a good schedule for us. H works 1-10pm on Wednesdays, so I am able to take over with the baby at 12 and this saves us daycare and after school cost for the older girls. If I could, I would have either Wed or Friday off completely, but this works for now.

    1.  I have always wanted to be a teacher (my mom was a teacher)....so I became one and love it.

    2.  I have to be at work from 7:40 - 2:55 at a minimum...I'm normally here from 7:30 - 3:30, then I have stuff at do at home as well from time to time.  I LOVE my hours.  I feel so fortunate to have a good chunk of the afternoon to spend with my kids, and I really love having the same breaks that they have.  I did not become a teacher for the schedule, but I think as a working mom it is the biggest benefit.
It's so refreshing to hear a teacher be so positive about her job! I have many teachers in my family, and they seem to have forgotten that they have any perks (afternoon time, spring/fall/summer/Christmas break, etc.) and spend their time complaining about every aspect of their jobs. Thanks for the upbeat take on the life of a teacher.
  • 1.  I wanted to become a teacher or a fashion designer.

    2.  My hours are from 7-3:30 with a 30 minute lunch.  I requested that my hours be changed to this since it makes my commute easier and gives me more time with DS so for those reasons, I do love my hours.  I would love them more if they were cut in half ;)

    1. Not sure I remember what I wanted to be.  But if I had to pick something other than engineering (which I do love), I'd pick something more creative like party planning, or restaurant owner/chef or B&B owner.
    2. I am usually in the office around 8:15 and leave by 5:30.  Sometimes I take early morning or late evening calls since I work in a global team.  I like the hours.  If I need to run out on my lunch break, no biggie.  People don't clock watch here.  Our office is moving and I'm thinking of shifting my hours to 7-4 so I can avoid the evening rush hour.  I'll go from a 15 minute commute to a 45 minute commute... sad :(
  • 1. I trained to be a ballet dancer for years. My hips were shot by the time I was 17, so that was the end of that. I really wanted to be a veterinarian, and I worked for one from when I turned 14 until I was in college. When I realized how crappy the money vets make is, I was outta there.
    2. I'm an 8-5 in the office girl. Then I work a lot at night. And check emails before I leave for work. I would love to work earlier, but it's just not in our company culture. Whether we show up at 6 or 9, we are expected to be in the office until 5 at least. I wish face time were less of a "thing" here.
  • 1.  I wanted to be an architect
    2.  I work 8:30-5:00 with a 30 minute lunch.  My hours are okay, but I'm thinking of shifting them earlier to have more time in the evenings.  I do have the flexibility to work from home on an ad hoc basis, run errands during the day, or shift my hours on occasion.
  • 1. I wanted to be a teacher but realize now that I would never have had the patience for it.

    2. M - 8-4:30/5 T-Th 7-4:30:5 (depending on if I take a 30 min or hour lunch). 35 hours per week (part-time)

  • 1. I wanted to be a doctor or a singer
    2. I work 8-5 in the office Tuesday and Wednesday, then from home the other 3 days a week, usually 7-4.  I wish my in office days were earlier so I could miss traffic, I spend 1 1/2 hours commuting in the mornings.  I just can't get out of the house early enough with my twins and 5 year old.

I'm a teacher.  I work 8-4:00.  I often have work in the evenings and/or weekends.  I'd love more time for planning/prep and some administrative duties I have at my school during the day. However, picking up my girls at DC earlier gives me valuable time with them and motivates me to manage time well during the work day.

  • 1. An actress. I was never good at acting but just wanted the fame and fortune! :-)
    2. I WFH on M and in the office T-F 8:30 - 4:30. Those hours vary depending on if I take lunch or come in earlier/leave later. When I have tight deadlines I work more, other times I work less. I love my schedule and the flexibility. The only thing I'd change is to work 20 hours a week and make my same salary!

  • 1. A doctor
    2. 8:30 to 4:30/5. (I leave home at 7:30 and get back around 6). I wish my commute was better. I also wish I didn't have to work at home on nights and weekends. I'm doing it less but it still happens and it is exhausting.
  • 1. I wanted to be a teacher

    2. 7:30-5
  • 1.  Honestly can't remember what I wanted to be as a kid but by high school I knew I wanted to be a doctor.

    2.  4 days per week, 8 to whenever I'm done which is usually 5-ish.  No real lunch break, I just gobble some food and catch up on charting or phone calls.  I do catch up on work at home as well on a regular basis.  I like my hours though I wish I had time to finish more work at work and have less to do at home but that would mean staying later so it's a trade-off.  And my ideal would be 3 days per week but that's not an option.
  • Wow - lots of teacher dreams. Hopefully this means that you had really great teachers as role models growing up.

@oughtonk - I don't think I've ever seen your siggy before. Your kids are super adorable!!!!

  • 1. Doctor and/or vet
    2. 9-4 and on most days some work in the evening after the little ones go to sleep. It's okay but I have no coverage, so when work get very busy (as it is now) I hate the added work at nights and weekends that I have to do, to just keep afloat.
