3rd Trimester

Real contractions at 32 weeks

Been having actual contractions, not BH, for a while. They get consistant then subside but never go away for long. They aren't giving me a shot to stop them. Sent me to hospital and basically said "yup, you are contracting but the test result says you won't go into labor in the next 2 weeks". I'm frustrated, tired, sore and want them to just do something. I have to go out of town for work for 2 weeks next week. They asked "do you have to go". Do you think I'd be going if I didn't have to go? So frustrated!

Re: Real contractions at 32 weeks

  • I mean...it's a logical question. And you are getting closer to your due date and if you are having contractions now, it seems like it makes sense not to be out of town when you could potentially go into labor.

That said, if your doctor says you won't go into labor, then maybe you just have to suck it up and be uncomfortable for the next few weeks? Sorry, I'm sure that sucks.

  • How far are you going??? If I was having contractions regularly, no matter what the tests said, I wouldn't go further than driving distance from the Hospital... there's no way you can get out of traveling??? Doesn't your boss realize you could have the baby any day? Not all babies are born at or after 40 weeks... at the very least, you should research hospitals around where you'll be staying just in case you do end up going into labor.
  • I would have your doctor write a note that says "cannot travel beyond 1 hour away from hospital after 32 weeks" for your employer
  • Get a doctors note. If you are in US, there are laws to protect your rights as a pregnant person. Most doctors advise against travel in 3rd trimester.

  • I am the boss ladies. It's my company and can not get out of it as I am under contract and lost an employee recently so I have no one to take my place. This is why I am frustrated. There is a shot they can give you to stop contractions and medicine to use to follow up. Obviously, if I went into labor while out of state I could go to a hospital there and maybe they would have the sense to give me the dang shot. I have always worked up to the last few weeks of pregnancy and there is nothing wrong with that. That is not my point here. The point is that these contractions have been going on for quite a while and they aren't doing anything to stop them. I know the test doesn't neccessarily mean anything. That is what THEY are basing their decision on. So for the judgemental comment, maybe try not being so judgemental. I am frustrated and don't need that junk too.
  • The shot doesn't always work. It didn't stop my contractions and the pill they gave me makes me weak and woozy. So traveling while on it, not awesome.

Are you dilated? Effaced? The doctors told me that at this stage contractions aren't terribly uncommon, but usually don't progress cervical change. That as long as they are more than 10 minutes apart, that I shouldn't worry, but stronger, consistent, and more frequent contractions (every few minutes) are more troubling at this stage.
  • OP, take care of yourself and your baby. What else do you want us to say? You have to go on this trip, you could potentially go into labor. What can we do about it?

This. I'm not sure what you want from us.  If they can't/won't give you anything to stop contractions you just need to make a decision that is best for you and your baby's well being.
  • What PP said. Also I'm not sure what meds you're referring to to be given after the shot... The shots are generally trabutaline (sp) and they're not really supposed to give you oral trabutaline after the shots for use at home anymore - FDA pulled its approval for oral trabutaline used over a time period greater than 48 hours (maybe 72, I forget) in 2010. You need to prioritize your baby right now. I get that there is pressure on you as a boss. I had something similar come up just last week as the boss of a company, and I, like yourself, was in the hospital the week prior with real contractions 5 mins apart (stopped by the shots but only for about 48 hours... They're back and have been since but no cervical changes and a negative FFn done at 33 weeks). You need to take care of yourself and your baby, or accept you might end up delivering in a random hospital.

  • The shot just temporarily relaxes the uterus muscle to stop contracting.. So its not a long term solution to help out with travel the next week unfortunately.

I'd be concerned and ask for the steriod shot for baby's lungs if your below 34 weeks. Hopefully you don't have any other pre term labor symptoms and things will calm down for you.
