Pregnant after IF

Feeling sick

So I woke up yesterday with, I think, it's a cold - stuffy nose, scratchy throat, slight headache, and couple body aches. I know that meds are generally not allowed and that's fine as I usually don't like taking meds anyway. However, I'm nervous that my immune system will attack baby. I'm 25 weeks tomorrow. Is baby too big now? Am I worrying for no reason? I don't think I have an immune problem but I am on baby aspirin and take Intralipids every 4 weeks. Also, this baby was conceived with donor eggs and dh sperm. So it's technically a foreign object. Idk, I'm just sorta nervous to be sick right now. Any advice? Anyone been in this position before? TIA!

Re: Feeling sick

  • Your baby is just fine but having a cold sucks! My doctor approved of regular sudafed, Claritin and cepacol throat lozenges. They helped a ton when I was sick with a bad sinus infection. I also did salons sinus washes similar to a netty pot.

  • Hi! Sorry to hear that you're not feeling well! It sounds like a cold, but if it lasts a few more days/symptoms worsen or for general peace of mind, go ahead and give your ob/gyn a call for more guidance and answers to your specific questions! Hope you feel better soon!

  • I'm sorry - having a cold when pregnant SUCKS!  As long as you don't develop a fever, baby will be just fine.  My doc ok'd benadryl at night and Robitussin DM during the day, although I only took it twice when I was super desperate.  Otherwise, I drank a lot of Emergen-C, took Cold Eeze, and did the neti pot.  I think with that and a lot of rest, it helped the cold cycle through fairly quickly.

  • You're immune system will not attack the baby :)

I would call your doctor asap to clear all meds since you are already taking some, you don't want to risk any interactions. Also you want to double check that it's just a cold! Get some rest and feel better :)

  • My doctor also told me not to take emergen-c, zicam or other "natural" cold remedies that are huge doses of vitamins and minerals. Be sure to check your list first or call the office.

@Neesey interesting on the Emergen-C!  My RE didn't say anything, but I'll have to ask my OB about it today.  I've still been taking it...hopefully I didn't fuck anything up :(

ETA: OB said Emergen-C was fine, so every doc is different.  Just check all meds or natural remedies with your OB.

  • Sorry you're not feeling well! I had a cold at 13w and was MISERABLE! My OB said sudafed was ok and Airborne was also on their list of approved meds during pregnancy. It was my first time trying that and it seemed to help a bit. I ended up with an URI that wasn't going away and had to take codeine cough med, an antibiotic and two inhalers (all Category C's except the antibiotic). I would check with your OB to see what they approve/recommend so you can try to get some relief! Hope you feel better soon.

  • My doctor okay'd decongestant nose spray. Thank goodness or I wouldn't have slept!

Your baby will be fine. Tons of Moms get sick while pregnant - baby probably won't be affected at all. The idea that your immune system would attack your baby because it's fighting a bug is like being afraid it will attack your lungs - antibodies are very specifically targeted towards what they are fighting, and they don't attack other things.

The only situation where your immune system views baby as an enemy that is common (obviously there's some weird immune disorders out there, but they're very very rare) is when a baby is rH positive but the Mom is rH negative. This doesn't even usually affect the baby you're carrying, but if not treated during pregnancy with Rhogam shots, it can lead to the Mom's body attacking future rH positive babies if she's ever pregnant again.

  • Thanks guys! I feel better about it now! I guess it is kinda silly when you put it in those terms (antibodies attacking lungs when you have a cold - that made me LOL!).

I'll have to check with OB and see what she recommends. Besides the baby aspirin, I'm only drinking lots of oj and tea with honey and lemon. My throat's kinda cleared up and my stuffy nose is now a runny nose. Guess I'm on my way to recovery ..

  • Hope you feel better! I had either a severe cold or a mild flu around beta, and it was miserable. I even had to take cold/tepid showers to bring my fever down. Sounds like yours is less severe!

xc1148 had a really good point - you want to make sure that anything over the counter doesn't interact with other meds you are on.

I also fully support your OJ & tea w/ honey & lemon treatments.
:D  The netti pot is another safe non-medicine treatment that I'd recommend.

Good luck & feel better soon.  And if you can get your hands on some homemade chicken soup (without having to actually make it yourself) - then I recommend that too.
