Congested Baby

I'm waiting on a call back from my pediatrician but DD is really congested. I've tried a vaporizer and sitting in the bathroom while running a hot shower. I've tried sucking it out but nothing is really coming out of her nose.

If anyone has any helpful tips or advice I would really appreciate it.

Re: Congested Baby

  • When sucking lo nose, are you using some saline drops to loosen the snot?

  • Can you see boogers ? Mine gets congested too but if I can see boogers then I use the nose Frieda - at first I thought I couldn't suck it out but if you keep trying they will come out. Also I've heard some people suggest dropping some saline solution in there first to make it easier .
  • I second the saline drops/spray. DD is on her second cold in her short life (thank you preschool colds) and the only thing the Dr. said we could do was humidifier, steamy bathroom, saline/snot sucker, and sleeping on an incline in the rock n play. I have a nose Frieda, but in all honesty-it freaks me out so I haven't used it yet.  DH was reading online that said suctioning the nose can actually irritate it more if you can't physically see the snot, so we have been doing that as a last resort with the saline spray. Hope your LO feels better.

  • When you use the saline know they might vomit but don't be alarmed and let the drops it there for few seconds before you try and suck it out

  • I've tried the saline and haven't gotten anything. I only suction when I can hear her snotty breathing because I was afraid of over doing it and irritating her nose. She's been sleeping like crap today because she's so congested. I've put her in the swing because it's the only thing that is inclined besides her car seat.

Thank you for all your suggestions!
  • @suitern Don't be freaked out by the nosefrida! I used it for the first time last week and I love it. so much better than the ball suckers. I have yet to get baby snot in my mouth.

Yeah there is a little filter there for the boogers. It works pretty awesome.

  • When my daughter was very congested I blew into one nostril and it pushes the mucus out the other. You just keep blowing until it sound clear enough for you. But make sure when you finish you let them catch their breath every so often.
  • @Shekera94‌ while it may have worked for you and caused no problems, so many resources online and so many doctors warn against doing this, as it can cause more harm than people may realize. Don't blow into your baby's nose. Ever. It could send the mucus down into his chest or into the sinuses and cause infections, or could cause an embolism. If your baby is congested, try a saline spray to loosen mucus and then sit in a steamy bathroom with him to help clear the congestion. At worst, get a baby aspirator (one of those bulby things they use to clear out the baby's nose and mouth at the hospital when they're born) an suck out the mucous. But never blow.
